街道をゆくシリーズのいつもの作品のように、話は様々な時代に及び、飽きることがないが、この作品で私が特に関心を惹かれたのは、南都仏教のいわば最後の切り札として、当時最新の仏教を導入しようとした最澄と論争を繰り広げた、会津の徳一という僧に触れたいくつかの章である。その論争とは何かーすべての衆生が仏性を持つのか、それとも仏性を持つ人は限られるのか、という仏教の根幹にかかわる論争である。前者が勝つことにより、しかも旧仏教側の徳一という難敵との論争であるが故に最澄の考えを記した書が多く残るという結果を生んだことにより、後に浄土宗などの広く衆生の救済を目指す日本的な鎌倉仏教が花開く土台が築かれたのである。したがって、本書は「叡山の諸道」と合わせて読むことをお薦めする。そして、いわば最澄の考えをまとめる、引き出し役として徳一という僧にまつわる種々のエピソードを手際よくまとめる作者の手腕には、いつものことながら脱帽する次第である。

「街道をゆく」シリーズの魅力の一つに、歴史的には無名かもしれないけれども、その土地土地にまつわる興味深い人々を、著者の膨大な知識の箪笥から引き出して、我々に紹介してくれることがあります。
今回も、「奥州白河・会津のみち」において、会津と言う僻地に住みながら、かの最澄と仏教論争を繰り返した僧、徳一、そして、画の才能にめぐまれながら、時流から、イコン画家として生きざるを得なかった女流画家、山下りんという２人の方を知ることができました。こういう人物に遭遇してしまうと、同じ道をたどり、是非、自分も、このひとどもに触れてみたいと思わせてくれるのが、このシリーズの大きな魅力ではないでしょうか。
その点、「赤坂散歩」は思索の量や歩かれた距離が、やや小ぶりで、前半：５点、後半：４点の総合：５点といった所でしょうか。
