　メディチ家が君臨する１６世紀前半のフィレンツェを舞台とした、優雅な香りの漂う歴史小説。

ストーリーは、メディチ家傍流の若者ロレンツィーノが、暴君アレッサンドロに憎悪の念を抱き、そして暗殺実行に至るまでの一連の流れを軸に展開される。しかし、あくまでもこの小説の主役はロレンツィーノやアレッサンドロといった一個人ではなく、１６世紀前半のフィレンツェという都市である点が特徴であり、当時のフィレンツェの政治的・思想的状況、そして人々の暮らしぶりなどが、眼前に浮かんでくるように、活き活きと描かれている。これを可能とする筆者の知識、筆力は脱帽ものである。
　ルネッサンス時代のイタリアに興味がある人には、楽しみながら歴史・文化への理解が深まること請け合いであり、お勧めである。

　架空の主人公がイタリアの三都市を回るシリーズ。著者も実際に住んでいたフィレンツェの姿が、マキアヴェッリとのからみもあってよく描き出されている。同じくフィレンツェを舞台とした（と限らないが）『わが友マキアヴェッリ』と比較するのも面白い。こちらは勿論、実在した人物である、マキアヴェッリが主役。

　歴史小説で面白くもあり、また危険でもあるのは、どの部分が創作によるもので、どの部分が事実に基づくものかということだ。この「創作」が塩野氏は実に巧みだ。下手な創作などには、全く興をそがれてしまうが、塩野氏の作品には、著者からの謎掛け（？）を解く楽しみもある。関連して言えば、『サイレント・マイノリティー』の「歴史そのままと歴史離れ」で、著者自身がそれについて述べている。

いやー、著者はやはりただものではないですねー。すごい力量だと思います。

16世紀という時代、フィレンツェという都市、このころの貴族の生活などを、著者は完全に自家薬籠中のものにしており、自在に話を展開している。

フィレンツェの僭主制から君主制へ向かうプロセスを、ヴェネツィアの共和政体と鮮やかに対比する手腕。政治や国際政治の議論を、登場人物たちの会話に織り込む話の巧みさ。大国スペインの影を、スパイを通してさりげなく描く仕掛けなど、本当に舌を巻いてしまいます。

歴史ってこんなに面白くも書けるものなのですねー。
