「ローマ人の物語」の著者塩野七生による、ヴェネツィアとトルコを舞台にした創作歴史絵巻です。
この本の読みどころを簡単に挙げると
　１、史実に裏付けられた都市の描写
　２、現代のフツーの人なら一生かいま見る事の無い、国家による水面下の活動
　３、史実の中を泳ぐ架空の人物＝マルコ・ダンドロと遊女オリンピア
といったところでしょうか。

１と２に関しては人気のある他の著作でも見られる、要するに「定評のある」部分なのですが、３についてはこの作品にしかない楽しさです。
モノクロームで実感の無い「歴史」がマルコとオリンピアによってフルカラーの「今」に塗り替えられ、歴史の門外漢である私たち読者を当時の地中海の国々の民にしてくれるのです。

この作品を読んだ後は、テレビの歴史クイズ番組等で見る地中海がそれまでの印象とはまるで違うものになる事は間違いないでしょう。
※しかもなんと三部作です。この楽しさがあと２回もあるのです！

ルネッサンスの時代・全盛を誇っていたヴェネツイア共和国の中でも由緒ある貴族の家柄に生まれたマルコ・ダンドロ。 かつての学友で、ヴェネツイア最高権力者・ドージェ（元首）の息子でありながら庶子ということで貴族の称号を与えられず、国外でその商才を発揮し戻ってきたアルヴィーゼ・グリッティ。子供の頃は対等であった彼らも、今では貴族と平民に分けられ、時代の力には逆らうことのできない悲劇が待ち構えていた。マルコと長年来の恋人・コルッティッジャーナ（高級娼婦）のオリンピア、アルヴィーゼとプリウリ公の奥方・リディアの関係が、ヴェネツアとトルコを舞台に激しく切なく描かれている。ただの恋愛物ではなく、当時の時代背景・ヴェネツイアの街がまるで自分がその場所に居るかのように鮮明に描かれている様はさすが塩野七生作品とうならせる、3部作の中でも圧巻の歴史絵巻である。

西洋の歴史なんてあまり興味なかったし、ヴェネツィアを舞台にした物語が始めは読みつらいかと思っていたけど登場人物がとても魅力的ですんなり入っていけました。オリンピアにマルコ、アルヴィーゼ・・時代や国に翻弄されながらもたくましい彼らにわくわくしてきます。話の中には実在の人物が出てくるけどこんなにも自然に物語の一部になっているのが凄いとおもいました。描写がとても豊です。私は歴史上の人物とか出てくると、とたんに教科書を思い出して味気なさや小難しいという様なイメージがわいて話を読みにくいな~と感じることがあるけど、それが全然なかった。オモシロイ！！！
