　本小説が、戦前政府より苛烈な弾圧を受けた、大本教を題材としていることはよく知られている。
　「インテリゲンチャの苦渋」をその生涯のテーマとし、観念と人間の関わりについて問い続けた高橋和巳にとっては、宗教とは何か、というテーマは避けて通れない問題であった。
　本来生き延びてはいけない生を生き延びてしまった主人公のビルドゥングス・ロマンが上巻の内容である。ここで、座禅を通じて主人公が得る悟りの内容はすさまじいものがある。
　そして、下巻では、本来宗教人として最もふさわしくない主人公が教主として権力を手にする場面が描かれる。神通力を持たない、いや持ってはならない主人公の手に触れて信者の病いが忽ち癒えるのはなぜか？　この場面で筆者は宗教の本質の一面を鋭く抉り出している。

　しかし、魅力的な場面、作者の鋭い問題提起が現れている部分は随所にあれど、小説として成り立っているかどうかはまた別の問題である。残念ながら、教団が自己崩壊に向かう設定はいくら何でも無理がある。オウム真理教ではないのだから・・・。
　ただ、本小説の与える感動は、そういった小説としての完成度とはまた別の問題であることもきちんと指摘しておきたい。
　一読に値する名作であることはもちろんである。

この作品で描かれる、ひのもと救霊会は大本教との類似が指摘されるが、その大本教に関する知識のない私にとっては、どことなくキリスト教の初期に既に異端視され、徹底的に弾圧され焼き尽くされたカタリ派に似通うものがあるような気がする。「愛の宗教」とも呼ばれ、神への愛にも通ずるとして男女の愛に特別な価値を置いたというカタリ派と、既成の社会道徳にとらわれない男女の愛しあう形を認めたひのもと救霊会。また、カタリ派とひのもと救霊会の死の観念にも似たところがあるように思う。神の国の実現と人間の真の自由と解放を願う精神が権力者に憎まれ、弾圧を呼んだという点も同じであろうか。
作品の中で、日本の美しい農村風景と、一方で餓死者まで出すようなその社会構造が酷薄なまでに描かれ、救霊会はあくまで農村風土と密接に結びついているが、その宗教的理念は普遍的なものといえるのではないか。
迫害を受け、戦争で荒廃した社会状況の中、救霊会の選んだ道を愚かだと断ずるのは簡単だ。しかし、終戦を境に価値観の大転換を体験した作者は、１つの教義に殉じたこの教団をめぐる個性的な人物達を魅力的に描くことで、人間本来の生き方とは何かを問いかけているようだ。
