1940年、ドイツ・エッセン生まれ。ミュンスター大学とウィーン大学で歴史学とゲルマン学を学び、博士号を取得。編集者などを経て著作活動に入り、1978年、『皇太子ルードルフ―マイヤーリングへの道』を発表、一躍注目を浴びる。世紀末ウィーン・ハプスブルク帝国研究の第一人者として定評を得ている

中村 康之

　ミュージカル「エリザベート」の第2幕の最初では狂言回し役のルキーニによって「キッチュ」という歌が歌われます。
　キッチュとは、東宝の「キッチュ」の歌詞の中の言葉を借りれば「偽物」、実際は虚像と訳すのが一番よいでしょうか？
　ここには、いろんな作品（伝記も含む！）で描かれてきた今までのキッチュなシシィ像を愛してきた方には衝撃的ですらある、おとぎ話ではない本当のシシィの姿が描かれています。
　すでにシシィの伝記や小説をいくつか読んだ、しかしミュージカル「エリザベート」はまだ見たことがないという方は覚悟してお読みください（笑）。
　ミュージカルをご覧になった方（宝塚の「エリザベート」だけだとやはり衝撃的かもしれません　汗）は、ミュージカルを思い出しながらお楽しみください。シシィと彼女を取り巻く人達のこと、ミュージカルにトート（死または死神）が出てくる理由、当時の政治情勢などもよく分かります。
　シシィの伝記の最高傑作です！

今までエリザベート関連の本は何冊か読んできましたが、どれもエリザベートだけに焦点を当てていて、真実を知るのには不足な感がありました。しかしこの本は当時の政治情勢を詳しく扱っていて、エリザベートの生き方がいかに違和感があったのかがよく分かります。と同時に宮廷との摩擦からそういう人生を歩まなければならなかったこともよく理解できます。待望の文庫本により、手軽に購入し読めるようになり星5つにしたいところですが、内容が少々難しく読みこなすのが大変なので4つにしました。とにかくエリザベートを客観的に眺めたい人には最適な本です。

あまりにも有名な皇妃エリザベート。欧州の王族一の美貌を誇った彼女は
ミュージカルなどで現代に生きる人たちにも良く知られています。

当時のヨーロッパにおける最大の帝国の美貌の皇妃という彼女のイメージは
ロマンチックに受け取られがちですが、ブリギッテ・ハーマンの
手になるこの伝記は、彼女の生涯を数々の資料を駆使して詳細に描くことで、
当時の世界におけるエリザベートの姿をきわめて客観的に伝えてくれます。

姑のゾフィーとの確執、ハンガリーびいき、ウィーンの軽薄な社交界に
なじめない苦悩など、単なる華やかな王族ではなかった彼女の真の姿が
鮮やかに浮かび上がってきます。
同時に、容姿への異常ともいえる執着や皇妃にふさわしくない奇行など
彼女の影の部分も丹念に描写されています。
フランツ・ヨーゼフ皇帝やルドルフ皇太子、宮廷の貴族やおつきの女官などの性格も
詳しく描かれ(ルドルフがエリザベートの気質を受け継いでいたことが
マイヤリンクの悲劇を生む元となるなど)西洋史の好きな読者にとっては
実に興味のつきない書物といえるでしょう。

ただ、当時のヨーロッパの複雑な政治情勢の記述も多いため、
少女マンガ的な物語だけを期待する読者にはお勧めしません。
エリザベートの華やかで悲劇的な生涯を、オーストリア＝ハンガリー帝国の
繁栄と滅亡という大きな歴史的文脈のなかで捉えたい方々には、
願ってもない好著だと思います。
