　著者の捉える「編集」は、一般的な「本を編集する」などの意味とはだいぶ異なる。著者は「編集」を、人間だれもが生活で行っているものとして、捉えている。それは、世の中に溢れる情報を頭の中で整理したり、他の人とコミュニケ-ションをとったりといったようなことだ（もちろん、それはごく一部にすぎない）。

「編集工学」とは、ごくかんたんにいえば、そうした人間の生活が編集作業をする方法やシステムを探っていくというものだ。たとえば編集技法にも「収集」から始まって、「創造」にいたるまで、64に細分化されている。この本の中には、モノゴトの分類分けがよく出てくる。

　また、その編集工学の支えとなる、知識の量も膨大である。マルチメディア発達の場についてなど、物語のプロトタイプや理系・文系といった枠を超えたバックグラウンドの数々が披露される。編集というものに興味がない方であっても、教養を得ることができる（それも編集の一部）。
　読んでいてとくに驚いたことがふたつあった。

　編集工学ということをなぜ、著者が考えるようになったのか、その動機が意外なまでごく個人的な体験から来ているものだったということだ。

　そして、そのごく個人的な体験から編集工学を体系化するまでの間に、著者が行ったエクササイズの全貌だ。ぼおっとしていると頭の中に浮かんでくるモノやコト（情報の断片）を、そのままの状態にしながら観察するという、とても高度なエクササイズをして、頭の中の編集状態を調べていったという。たんに得られた知識を編集して編集工学の体系をつくったのではなく、そうした実験がなされていたのだということに驚いた。

「編集」者とだけあって、文章の中には様々な領域の知見が入っており、素直に知的に楽しめる。学問では難解な概念も入っているが、筆者の「知の編集」という概念に絡めて比較的易しく説明されており、門外漢でも十分楽しめるだろう。

数多く出ている著者の編集工学の本の中でも一番簡単に まとめて書かれている本です。 そして一番本業（編集工学そのもの）について書かれている本なのではないでしょうか？ ただし文庫の為、膨大な編集工学の項目一つ一つを読み解くことは難しく、分厚い本で一項目に一章を費やすか、 一項目について一冊くらいのボリュームがちょうど良いと思います。 しかし、これだけ見ても編集工学の一端しか知ることが出来ません。 自分の中で編集を繰り返しながら、もう一度基本に立ち帰ってみるときにちょうどいい本かもしれません。
