前作に続き、東大教授と写真家コンビが、日本（時には世界）各地の面白西洋館を訪ね歩いた記録。軽妙な文体と美しい写真でついついはまりこんでしまいます。
でも、こうした由緒ある（？）建築物が取り壊されているのを聞くにつけ、わが国って、街（建物）づくりの思想がないなあといつも悲しくなります。

半分が写真ですので、小一時間もあれば読めます。建築に興味の無い人でも、面白い本を探している人にはお薦めです。

　1988ｰ89年に出た単行本の文庫化。「建築探偵」シリーズの第２作。
　『雨天決行』で取り上げられているのは、中村遊郭、豊橋と函館のハリストス教会、東京駅など。そのほか、幼稚園や刑務所もいくつか取材されている。
　面白かったのは那須の別荘群。那須はいまも御用邸があるところ。軽井沢よりも早く避暑地として開発された場所で、山県有朋、大岩巌、乃木希典などそうそうたるメンバーが別荘を構えた。この別荘地の特徴はイギリスのカントリーハウスを真似たことにある。 イギリスの貴族・上流階級は田舎に屋敷と土地を持ち、春〜秋にかけてはカントリーハウスを舞台に華やかな社交を繰り広げたことで知られる。山県らも、まさにそれを再現しようとしたのだ。エステートを経営し、パーティを開き、狩猟に興じる。たとえば青木子爵邸の廊下には鹿の角がずらりと並んでいる。彼らは鹿狩りを行っていたのである。明治20〜30年代のことという。 明治維新とともに洋風の狩猟が日本に持ち込まれる。猟銃と猟犬を用い、娯楽として行われるタイプのものだ。 はじめは横浜や神戸の居留地のイギリス人が行っていたものが、次第に日本人にも広がっていく。
　そのあたりの、異文化の摂取について知ることが出来た。
　美しいし、面白い本。おすすめ。

日本にある西洋建築を中心に、その建築の歴史をしろうとにもわかりやすく解説してくれる東大教授の著者。ユーモアあふれるその文章ときれいな写真（文庫本でありながら本の半分は写真です）には引き込まれます。建築以外にもいろんなことが発見できる一冊です。
