著者紹介

本名、治。1928年11月3日、大阪府豊中市生まれ。大阪大学医学専門部卒業。医学博士。1946年『マァチャンの日記帳』でデビュー。1947年「新宝島」が大ヒットする。以来、日本のストーリー漫画の確立に尽くす。また、アニメーションの世界でも、大きな業績を残す。
代表作に『鉄腕アトム』をはじめ『リボンの騎士』『火の鳥』『ジャングル大帝』『ブラック・ジャック』『ブッダ』『アドルフに告ぐ』等がある。講談社、小学館、文芸春秋、日本漫画家協会等の各賞を受賞。漫画集団員、日本漫画家協会理事、日本アニメーション協会会長、日本ペンクラブ会員、日本SF作家クラブ会員等を歴任。1989年2月9日没。

ゲーテのファウストの漫画化。

メフィストは可愛い犬の姿をしていて、ファウスト以外に出ている
格付きの登場人物は色んな形で悪い大人として表現されている。

大胆不敵で自由気ままなファウストの苦悩・罪の意識などは
子供向けの漫画でも消化されないままストーリーが進んでいく。
なぜあきらめないのか、
どうして満足しようと思うのか、などの主人公の葛藤は、
メフィストの非科学的な他力と
清潔感ある青年の姿のファウストの微妙なバランスで表現されている。
前に進む気持ちを忘れずにいた時、自分が誇らしく思えるという
運びが物語のハッピーエンド。
このような形は氏の他の作品にもよく見られ、
私が氏の作品が好きな理由の一つです。

手塚氏にはファウスト作品が三部あり、こちらが第一作。
これはなんと２１歳医学生時代に創出している。

氏の遺著「ネオ・ファウスト」では
近未来の地球人とファウストとの関わりがテーマ。
もちろんオススメ

本作だけで手塚先生を語るのは野暮というものだと思います。
談志さんに言わせるなら「身の程知らず」なのでしょう。

若き日の先生の創作意欲に好感を持ちます。
ファウストは超が付く程のハッピーエンドです。先生に理解のない人が見れば
「物足りない」「いい子ちゃん」
と言うでしょう。
この物語を理解するには、氏の思想と理想。孤独な葛藤を、他の作品に触れることで考えなければなりません。
子供に薦めたいのは確かですが、大人になってからが「後編」なのでしょう。

私から云えるのは、
出来るだけ多くの手塚作品に触れてください。
　最初に見た筈のものが段々変わっていきます。
氏の人生を鑑みればとてもこんな作品は描けなかったと思うはずです。
同じ朝日文庫の「ネオ・ファウスト」を見れば、
氏がただの「いい人」「理想主義者」ではなかったとわかります。
先生には怒りがあったんですね。

ファウストの物語を、ものすごく簡潔にまとめられています。
簡潔すぎて、読んでるこちら側が考える暇を与えられないのが星３つの理由です。
大人になってから、ようやく、よい死に方をするために、よく生きるようにしなければ！と、思うようになったけど、

　もしもこの本に子供のころ出会っていれば、もっともっと自発的に勉強、スポーツに熱心に取り組んでいたかもしれません。
