写真が豊富で私にとっては写真集。
フチもなくページ全面(時には見開き全面）で迫ってくる写真。美しくて死が身近なインド。少女の瞳が鋭く深くみずみずしい。男たちの目も鋭いけれどどこか乾いて。

若かった私に、どの写真も深く印象に残った。本を閉じても、何年か経っても、忘れられない視線とぶつかるはずです。読み返すことは滅多にないのに､手放したくない一冊になりました。

藤原新也の処女作である本書は、旅行記である以上に著者の自分自身への旅の記録である。言葉の端々には、旅に映し出された著者自身、感性、リズム、そして若さがある。多くの人が青年のころ帯びるであろう熱気を、言葉として、書物として残せた著者を羨ましく思う。あらゆる文脈から切り離しても一つの詩集と言ってよい輝き。

P．27~88の語録がおもしろい。例えば、インドの人たちのことを“悪人、俗人入り乱れて人間博覧会みたい…”と表現している部分。
写真に奥行きが感じられます。ただ、途中ガンジス河畔での死体も出てくるので、グロいのが苦手な人は直視できないかもしれません。
藁半紙みたいな紙を使っていて、文体と写真の朴訥さが出ているような感じがしました。

旅行記としては、話がもう30年以上前のことで色あせが激しく内容もイマイチですが、青春論として読むなら、若い人にとって色々共有できる部分があると思います。著者の青春時代の「熱」を感じました。
