耽羅、「タンラ」、あるいは、「たむら」。
すなわち、済州島のことである。

そこは韓国唯一のミカン栽培地、という紹介から始まって、じっくりその独特の文化のひだを分け入るように、司馬氏の筆は進んでいく。

身近な韓国というだけで、充分に興味深いが、司馬氏自身が、念願の旅先のひとつとして思いつづけていた土地、というだけに、冷静ながらも熱のこもった観察・発見の文章を堪能できる。
（ちなみに、司馬氏念願の５大旅行地は、モンゴル、バスク、アイルランド、ハンガリー、済州島だったとのこと）

良き道案内として、姜在彦（カン・ジェオン）氏を得て、文献と耳学問との両方向から、済州島――ひいては韓国、日本、モンゴル――の実態と関連性が、ふかく、だが平易に、解き明かされていく。
読むほどに、しみこむ、そんな平易な筆さばきが、じつにありがたい。

韓国における流罪の地であった、ということからの連想で、菅原道真の生涯を振り返る相当長い脱線も、転んではタダでは起きぬという中身で、それはそれで面白く読める。
（在野の知識人、司馬氏が、昔も今も変わりのない公職の官僚学者たちの醜くおぞましい人事抗争・出世競争を、おもう存分に揶揄しているのだった）

朝鮮半島の南に位置する済州島についての紀行文です。「街道をゆく」シリーズの１つの楽しみとして、著者が同行した人々の性格や所作を、非常に好ましく描いていき、こちらまで素敵な気分に浸れることがあります。今回も、済州島出身の玄文叔氏、姜在彦氏という人物的にも、そして、業績面でも素晴らしい人々を、著者は暖かい筆致で描いており、清々しい気分にさせてもらいました。
何か、読後感が、他のシリーズの本に似ているなあと思ったら、「台湾紀行」のような感じといえばいいでしょうか。著者のいつもながらの、膨大な思索量と、暖かなまなざしに触れることができる面白い１巻です。
