街道をゆくシリーズ27。1986年作。
「因幡・伯耆のみち」と「檮原街道」の二編を収録。

檮原街道は高知県西北部から四国脊梁山地を越えて愛媛県へと続く道。
ルート的には現在の国道197号・320号の前身と言うべき道で、
古くから高知高岡郡と伊予の宇和・喜多両郡とを結ぶ物資流通の要路だった。
檮原は土佐最奥部にある僻地の山村でありながら、その名は全国的な知名度を持って語られる。
それは幕末期の貢献が大きいからに他ならない。
吉村虎太郎、那須信吾らを輩出したこと、また坂本竜馬ら土佐脱藩志士の抜け道として、その国抜けに協力的であったことにある。
今も檮原には旧道と旧番所跡が残り、また町域には「維新の門」という幕末志士の大掛かりな銅像があり、観光客を集めている。

「嗚呼、青雲の志」などと詠嘆に暮れるだけなら誰でもできるが、司馬氏の視点は飽くまで実証的である。
檮原のそういった人気（じんき）を考察するに、中世津野荘の世にまで遡り、
「長曾我部でも山内でもない、独立した気分」
として幕末檮原の態度を理解する点、流石の洞察力を感じさせられる。
また棚田や神楽といった人文景から、石灰岩質の痩せ地に生きてきた山村のしなやかさを描いて見せる。

「因幡・伯耆のみち」では、早野⇒鳥取⇒白兎海岸⇒鹿野⇒夏泊⇒倉吉⇒伯耆大山⇒美穂保関というルートをたどり、
各地で歴史の断片を拾い集めてゆく。そのため読者としてはまとまった感想を持ち辛いが、
これらが結実して司馬氏の心に「日本の姿」が構築されているのだろう。

鳥取県を題材に展開される日本分析。
司馬遼太郎の本領が十二分に発揮されている。
大国主命で神話を語り、土地所有の問題を古代の公地公民制からはじめ、鎌倉の土地私有権の要求、室町の貨幣経済、江戸の専売制と語る。
漁業技術や農業技術あり、人類学的な人相分析あり、自然地理的な景観分析あり。
すらすらと読みこめる論理性の高い文体で、多面的な物事の切り口が、展開されている

氏の「街道をゆく」シリーズの魅力の一つとして、有名ではないけれども、著者の博学によって、その土地が「へえ、こういうことがあったところなんだ。行ってみたいなあ」と思わせるという点があると思います。
例えば、ここで紹介されている檮原などはその最たるものでしょうか。江戸時代、脱藩の道として知られ、かの坂本竜馬も、この地を通ったとのこと。竜馬ファンであれば、思わず、旅行の際、訪れたくなります。
また、いつもの暖かな筆致で、土地の人情、歴史を描く点は、シリーズ共通のもであり、歴史の中では、比較的地味な役目を負わされた因幡・伯耆という地域についても、魅力的な人どもを通じ、行ってみたいと思わせる土地に描かれています。
