ベトナム戦争は歴史上最も自由な報道が許された戦争といわれている。日本人の手による戦場の記録というと、とかく加害者か被害者の立場に立ったものばかりが目につくが、開高健は当事者ではない第三者として中立の立場で現実を直視し、判断し、記録しようとする。

最近のイラク戦争を見ていると、メディアを通して報道される情報がいかにコントールされているかを思い知る。しかし、本書に記録された内容を私は信じることができる。なぜなら、当時すでに小説家としての高い地位にいた一人の男が、命懸けで目撃してきたものだからである。テレビの報道を見ながら、あれこれ発言する作家は多い。しかし、現実に起こっていることを確かめるために実際に戦場まで出かけていくだけの勇気を持つ作家は、今の日本に果たして何人いるだろうか？

まだ少年と言える時代に読んでしまった。戦争とはいったい何なのか？など考える余裕などなかった。
「ベトコン少年、暁に死す」の項を読まなければ良かったと後悔しつつ読み続けた。胃の辺りが石を飲んだように重くなって、目には涙が浮かんできたのを今でも覚えている。
開高健先生は、私にとって人生の師と勝手に決めているのですが、この本の内容は中学生の私にとっては厳しすぎたと思う。
今、子供にも開高先生の小説を読むように勧めているが、この本はもう少し後にしようと心に決めている。

　「ベトナム戦記」という本の存在だけは知っていたが、ようやく手にとって読んだ。
　これは、開高健氏のベトナム従軍記です。いままで戦争に関する本はいくつか読んだが、「ナンバー・ワン」です。
　ベトコン少年の公開処刑を書いた「ベトコン少年、暁に死す」の章から最前線に赴く後半の章は、臨場感があって、実際に開高氏と一緒にいるような妙な感覚になる。一流小説家である開高氏の文章の力だろう。
　この本のなかで「ベトコン少年、暁に死す」の章は特に凄い。凄くて深い。「戦争」や「人間」の存在そのものの本質をわしづかみにするような迫力ある文章である。
　たとえ、この章だけでも読む価値はある。
