街道をゆくシリーズ14冊目、1981年の作。
本作中のルートは、松山⇒砥部⇒大洲⇒宇和（現西予市）⇒宇和島⇒松野。
タイトルは「南伊予・西土佐の道」となっているが、中予から西予、さらに南予と、
愛媛県域のルートをたどっている。
「西土佐」に関しては、松野町のくだりで中近世の予土間の交わりに僅かに触れる程度で終わってしまう。
この点、中村から足摺、宿毛方面の記事をアテ込んでいると少々肩透かしを食うことになる。

とは言えこの作品でも、縦横に駆け巡る司馬氏の思索の面白さは十分に味わえる。
その博覧強記ぶりと広角な視点には相変らず驚かされる。
大森彦七、二宮敬作、山家清兵衛など、全国的な視野だけでは見落としてしまうような歴史の断片を拾い集めながら、
今日に連綿と続く歴史の流れに想いを馳せて行く。

陽光溢れ地味肥沃、開明的な伊予から、太平洋の荒波に揉まれた骨太な土佐へ。
この一冊を読み終わっても、また次の「書の旅」に出たくなる。

松山市から宇和島を経て、松野町まで、愛媛県内を旅する１冊です。「街道をゆく」シリーズといえば、司馬氏が旅先で見聞したことどもから、歴史上の有名・無名を問わない、様々な人々や出来事に思索を飛ばして行く作業に付き合うことが無類に楽しいわけです。
ですが、この巻は、１２巻の「十津川街道」同様、正岡子規、高浜虚子等の俳諧の偉人たちを生み、夏目漱石も暮らした文化の香り高い松山に代表される町そのもの、そしてそこで暮らす人々を捕らえた１巻になっており、まさに紀行文といえるのが特徴でしょうか。
ただ、「十津川街道」の巻がそうであったように、その町の魅力が、司馬氏のフィルターを通して、捕らえられており、シリーズの中では小品といえるかと思いますが、十二分に楽しめる内容になっています。
