書かれたのは1971年。日本の暴力的支配から解放されて26年目。日本と日本人に対する恨みの感情が根強く残り、司馬氏は韓国の旅行社の人からは「また合併したいのか？」と詰問されてしまう。韓国国内では、日本の大衆文化は一切禁止されていたような、日韓関係の暗黒の時代と言ってもいい。

司馬氏は、そのような日韓関係を深く憂いている。日本と韓国は、民族的には同じルーツを持ち、使う言語もウラル・アルタイ語族に属し、親戚にあたる（その学説は最近揺らいでいるらしい）。上古の昔から、韓国の間では頻繁に人や文化の往来があったのに、こんなにいがみあうのは、おかしいし、悲しい。そういう思いが動機となった旅であるように思う。

司馬氏は、加羅、新羅、百済の旧跡をたずね、日本と韓国の交流の歴史を読み解いている。日本海（「東海」と言うべきか？）を隔ててはいるものの、２国間には深いつながりがある。古代の日本にもあったと言われる歌垣のようなイベントを見たり、秀吉の侵略に抗して、朝鮮に帰化した日本人の武士の末裔が住む村の訪問など、感動的なエピソードを交えながら、非常に親密だった日韓関係の歴史を詳説する。その文章からは、日韓関係を何とかより良いものにしたい、という著者の情熱がにじみ出ている気がします。

しかし、日韓の文化的交流が本格的に始まり、「韓流」がブームとなるまでには、さらに３０余年の年月を待たなければならなかったのです。

一昔前の韓国のことですが、日本人の本当にルーツは韓国なのだろうと思います
旅行に行くときは、街道をゆくを必ずよんでから出かけます
そうすると、本当に楽しい旅行になります
ガイドブックとは違いますが、その場所、国の歴史、文化などがよくわかり、一味違う旅行になります
韓国と日本が本当に仲良くなることを祈っております

お隣の国なのに、あまり知らない韓国のことが知りたくて、読んでみようとしました。司馬遼太郎さんの街道を行くシリーズの本です。その土地土地を実際に訪ねて、歴史を振りかえるシリーズで、とても面白いです。紀行文の楽しさと、歴史の解説と両方楽しめる構成になっています。この本を読むと長い歴史的視点でみると韓国と日本は非常に近い関係にあったことがわかります。早く両国が真に仲良くなることを今までよりより強く感じさせてくれました。シリーズの他の本と比べて、一冊全部からの国で、面白かったです。
