まず「日本人」の死者観を確認してから、戦死者をめぐる遺族の思いと国家の介入を批判的に論じる。この種の仕事は、すでに日本民俗学の専門家らがある程度手をつけているので、とくに目新しいものではない。が、軍人やその遺族の手記を主な資料として、戦地の「死者」への対処法の諸相をみていく部分はかなりおもしろく、おそらく著者が最も力をこめているところであろう。限界状況でも「死者」をきちんと葬ってあげたい。失われた、あるいは置き去りにされた「遺体」をそれでも手元に収めたい、と欲望した「日本人」。彼らがどのような代替案をひねりだすのか、そしてそこでは国家権力がどのような役回りを演じてきたのか。そこには人間の未知の想像力があり、いまもリアルに現存する支配者のさめた戦略がある。

日本において人は、他人の死を、そして自分の死を、どのようにとらえてきたのか。そうした「死者」観がいかに変容し、近代戦争における「戦死者」観へと流入してきているか。

この本の真骨頂はやはり、「日本人の死の文化」という側面から靖国神社の「政治性」を分析するところにあると思われる。「靖国神社が持つ政治的影響」という結果面のみから靖国神社の是非を問うことの一面性には、否みがたいものがあると私には思われる。どのようなポジションに立つのであれ、靖国を支える文化の存在とそのありようを理解する必要が、あるのではないだろうか。おそらく本書は、その手がかりとなりうるだろう。

　今更死の政治性について論じてみる必要もなかろう。死者儀礼において、旧軍でも日本人の伝統的な身体と魂の扱い方に配慮せざるを得ず、霊魂は靖国に祭り、遺体は家に戻すことが原則のようであったが、一つ疑問が残った。近畿地方に見られる両墓制が成立しているところでは、原則として遺体は死穢として排除したはずだが、戦時中はどのような扱いがなされたのだろうか。
