陰陽道ブームを巻き起こした「陰陽師」シリーズで、伝奇小説に新たな1ページを開拓した夢枕獏。そんな彼が、イラストレーター・天野喜孝と、同じ舞台、同じテーマで作りあげたコラボレーションが、本書である。小説家が3つの短編を書き、画家がその世界をビジュアル化した。天野は、夢枕の「キマイラ吼」シリーズでイラストを担当して以来、夢枕の作品世界を具現化するのになくてはならない存在だ。今回は、黒を基調にして、朱色や紫色を巧みに配し、平安時代の夜の闇にうごめく鬼や妖怪、そしてその闇に浮かびあがる妖艶な女性たちを描いている。
あとがきにもあるように、収められた短編は、いずれもが「Hな譚（はなし）」であり、全編官能小説といってもいい。肉欲とは無縁なはずの聖が、ふと出会った人妻に耽溺して、矢も楯もたまらず女犯に走ったり（第1話）、鬼から絶世の美女を勝ち取ったにもかかわらず、欲情を抑えられずに彼女を不意にしてしまったり（第2話）。最後の第3話にいたっては、実在の漢学者にして歌人の小野篁を主人公にして、堂々と「近親相姦」を描いているのだ。登場人物たちは、たしかに愛欲まみれなのだが、彼らの燃えさかる情炎の中に、人間が生来持っている業のようなものが垣間見えて、哀れを誘う。
エロチックで少しかなしい物語が、夜の帳の中で淫靡（いんび）に繰り広げられる。夢枕の文章と天野の挿絵が、読み手にリアルで生々しい「性」の感触を与えてくれる。 （文月 達）
