出世の見込みもなく家での居場所もない父。子育てと姑そして家を顧みない夫に不満を持っている妻。父との関係も悪く、本当の友達がいない長女。喘息を持病に持ち過保護に育てられた
長男。夫の死後、認知症の症状が出て来た祖母。どこの家庭でもあるような問題を抱えた家族が、父の仕事の都合で田舎の昔の家に引っ越すことに…。しかし、そこにはかわいい座敷わらしがいて…。★ほんわかとして荻原さんの作品では好きです。★今、どこのお家でも抱えているような問題を持つ一家が座敷わらしを通して一致団結してゆく姿がとても微笑ましかった。★座敷わらしが、とてもかわいらしくってちょっと怖いイメージがあるけれども我が家にもぜひ来てちょうだいと思えるほどしでした（爆）。★座敷わらしの本当の意味を初めて知った時は、切なくウルッと…。童謡『しゃぼんだま』の本当の意味と遭い重なってジーンとしてしまいました。★幸福を招くを言われている『座敷わらし』は、高橋一家に家族の意味をきちんと残してくれたことでしょう。

日常生活に起こるちょっとした出来事をきっかけに、バラバラになりかけていた家族が再生し
ていく姿をユーモラスに、時にほろりとさせつつ描く荻原節全開の一冊です。サスペンスミス
テリーからシリアスものまで、幅広い才能を見せる作者ですが、「なかよし小鳩組」や「オロ
ロ畑でつかまえて」、「神様からひと言」といった爽やかな読後感の残るサラリーマン小説を
描かせたら三つ星シェフだと思います。

自らが広告代理店でのサラリーマン経験があるからか、描かれているサラリーマンの家族像に
リアリティがあって、登場人物の描きこみの深さも見事です（ここが嘘くさいサラリーマン小
説が多い）。そのリアリティをベースに、過度ではないユーモアやファンタジーを加え、最後
にちょっとしたうれしい驚きを加えて仕上げる腕はプロフェッショナルだと思います。

新聞の連載小説という体裁を取っていたこともあって、劇的な展開はなく、平凡な話が淡々と
続くので、小説自体の完成度は書き下ろしの方が優れているとは思います。ですが、それを割
り引いて考えても、この小説を読んだ後、古民家に入る機会があったら、きっと座敷わらしを
探してしまうだろうな、と思わせるだけの力があります。

現代の、なんとなくよくいそうな個性をもつ、それぞれのキャラクター設定の仕方と、そのさりげなさが秀逸。携帯を見つめながら、そのメールを出そうかどうか、その返事のフレーズ一つ一つを気にして悩む女子中学生。ぼけの中に身を潜め、息子夫婦との微妙な距離感を図る義母・・・そしてその一人一人が、新しい田舎暮らしと出会い、そして座敷わらしとの邂逅を通じてひとつ、またひとつと薄皮が向けていくように心を開きあってゆく。そうしてできていく家庭の絆を、さりげなくテンポのよいせりふでつづっていく。重厚なテーマとさりげない軽妙な作品両方を手がける著者の作品の中でも、温かさがにじみ出て秀逸な一品。おすすめです。
