2.0 out of 5 stars 挿絵がない…, 2007/5/16
新聞連載時に読んでおり、最終回には「で、だから？」というよな
置いてけぼり感でいっぱいになったので、まとめて読めば
新しい発見が…と思いましたが変わりませんでした。

物語は二人の男性それぞれの主観視点で交互に語られますが、
それが後半になると語り手は一人に集中してしまい、読んでいて
アンバランスな気持ちになります。

ただ、これだけワーキングプアについて調べました！　な取材感漂う
場面より、人どうしの感情のぶつかりを描く段になると見事な描写で
ぐいぐいひきこまれ、そこは作者の本領発揮という感じです。

あと、仕方ないんですが、連載時には毎回挿絵が掲載され
感情移入に役立っていたのですが、単行本ではそれが無いのが
ちょこっと淋しいですね……

舞台は沖縄。
物語は逃亡してきた2人の若者の出会いによってはじまる。
一人は記憶喪失の男。
そしてもう一人は全寮制の職業訓練所のような施設を飛び出してきた昭光。
それぞれの視点から語られる沖縄と現代の若者の問題を描きます。

沖縄の政治問題、ＤＶ、集団自殺、低賃金で働く外国人労働者、
ニート、ワーキングプア、派遣社員の現状など
現代の日本が抱える様々な問題をたくさん絡めてあり、
グイグイ引っ張られるような吸引力がある。
でも、やや詰め込み過ぎな印象です。
そこへ沖縄のうだるような暑さが襲い掛かかり、
ジリジリと焼けつくような作品です。

中でも私にとって最も印象深かったのは
本土から移住してきた人と、
もともとの沖縄住民との「沖縄」に対する思いの差。
両者とも沖縄を愛しているのに変わりはないのに、
どうしても越えることのできない壁がある。
この温度差を埋めるにはまだまだ長い年月がかかるのでしょうね。

何人かのレビュアーさんはこのラストに救いや希望を感じたと書いているけど、
私はそうは思わない。
記憶喪失というゼロの状態から自分を見つけていったギンジ。
すべてを思い出した時の葛藤、そして最後の選択・・・。
彼の未来に果たして希望はあるのでしょうか。
このラストには彼のような若者には、
悲しいけど抜け道がない現状がはっきり描かれていると思うのですが・・。

正直この本でワーキングプアーの現実を知ったと言ってもよいと思います。
フリーターという言葉からうける身軽さと異なり、そして一昔前の工員とも
異なり、なんか心身ともに磨り減っていくのがよくわかりました。
この小説が新聞で連載されているころはまだワーキングプアーはそれほど
注目されていませんでした。それにいちはやく目をつけた桐野女史は相変わらず
時代をきりとるのが上手だと思います。
