1985年の初版から20年、待望の改訂版が出ました。
見出し語は、旧版の6万5千語から9万語に増えて、
携帯可能な中辞典としては十分な語数を誇ります。
とりわけパソコンや情報関係では、他の辞典には
まだ載っていない語が満載です。例えば、
オンライン(en ligne)やオフライン(hors ligne)、
デジカメ(appareil numerique)などなど。
CD-ROMも付いていますが、使い勝手はイマイチ…？
特にハードディスクにコピーしようとすると、昼寝
するくらいの時間がかかるのには閉口する。
しかし本体の内容に関しては、この値段は決して高く
ないと思います。

辞典を使うという行為は一般には言葉の意味を調べることと解されがちだが、インターネットや電子辞書の発達により、言葉の意味を調べるだけであればわざわざ紙の辞書をもつ必要のない時代に突入している。そういう時代にあって紙の辞書の果たす役割は、語源や語にまつわる文化的背景を調べたり関連知識として読んだりすることにウェイトが移りつつあるように思われる。つまり、辞典の事典化こそが現代の紙の辞書に求められているのではなかろうか。

この辞典は、まさにそこを見事に達成しており、フランス語圏の文化背景までもが垣間見える作りになっている。例えば、cathedrale(5字目eにはアクサンテギュあり)を開くと語義ばかりではなく、フランスの代表的な大聖堂が紹介されている。また、一般の外国語辞典では割愛されそうな数学的な数の分類についても、nombreの項目の最後を見るときちんとまとめられている。そのような辞典に出会ったことは私はこれまでなく、この辞書で辞書を読むという楽しみをはじめて知った。

外国語学習辞典として利用するには多少語数が多すぎて仏検で4級レベルまでは逆に使いにくい感じもするだろうが、それ以上のレベルになってきて書物を読んだり歴史的・文化的・学術的背景を理解しておく必要のある場面が多くなればなるほどこの辞典の素晴らしさがわかるであろう。なお、文法については巻末に簡易レファレンスがついておりこれは便利だ。

ただ、惜しまれるのはこのクラスの辞書での競争相手がいないことである。よい競争相手がいればさらに辞書の改善も進むと思われる。逆に言えば現時点ではそれだけよくできた辞書だとも言えよう。

フランス語はかなりメジャーな言語だといえると思いますが、英語ほどには辞書に選択肢がないのも実情であると思います。
フランス語を本格的に勉強したい人は、この辞書を手元に置くことをおすすめします。
この辞書の収録語数は群を抜いたのもがあると思います。語義だけでなく、説明的要素ももっています。
他のフランス語学習辞書と比べるとかなり大きいので持ち運びには不便ですが、これはむしろ内容が豊富ということの物理的な現れですね。
ＣＤ−ＲＯＭ付きなのがうれしいですね。
