1965年ノーベル物理学賞を受賞し、数々の著作も人気のあるリチャード・P・ファインマン氏の講演録を書籍化した作品です。
この講演は、1963年にワシントン州立大学で三夜に渡って行われたもので、それぞれ「科学の不確かさ」「価値の不確かさ」「この非科学的時代」というタイトルがつけられています。
"名調子"と言ってよいカジュアルな語り口で持論を楽しく展開しています。
書名からすると科学批判のように思えますが、そうではなく、科学的な精神とは「すべてを不確かであると認める謙虚さ」と定義し、その考えの重要性をさまざまな視点から主張しているものです。
個々のエピソードは冷戦のまっただ中とあって旧ソ連の話や、マリナー2号!などという古いものが多いですが、その主張は現代でもそのまま通用するものとなっています。
特に当時はまだラジオと新聞がメインだったはずのメディアに対して、早くも「エセ科学」批判も展開しているのも興味深いところです。

　気さくな人物でイタズラ好き、そしてボンゴがうまかったファイマンさんの本です。今回は岩波現代文庫として出版されました。「科学者の言うことが正しいとは限らない」という言葉は納得します。確かに化学は不確かな物をファインマンさんが茶目っ気たっぷりに語ってくれています。名文家で面白く、尚かつ為になるファインマンさんの本を読むことで科学とは何か。そして我々を科学の素晴らしさへと誘ってくれます。本当にこの本は面白くて良い本です。子供も読んで楽しめる本です。

好奇心溢れる物理学者による、3夜連続の講演の文字化。
内容としては、「間違えた考え方からは間違えた結論しか出ない」といったもの。
正しい理解の為にはどういった姿勢を取るべきなのかを、やや婉曲的に示している。
並ならぬ知識欲と、その結果としての知識とを背景にした、ナイスな講演。
語り口・内容、どちらも堅苦しくなく、読むのにも易い。
