この本は白人たちのアメリカ西部開拓に追われ、最後まで隠れながら生きていたヤヒ族のイシについて書かれた本である。二部に分かれていて、第一部はインディアンとしてのヤヒ。そして、第二部は文明社会の一員として生きるミスター・イシの生活について書かれている。西部開拓は原住民であるインディアンを追い払い成し遂げられたもので、いつも白人側の見方でしか見られていない。そういう歴史があって今のアメリカが成り立っているのだから、こういう事実は忘れられてはいけないものだと思う。現在行われている戦争などにも通じる深いテーマが隠されているので、多くの人に読んでもらいたい本。

もしも、戦争や疫病で日本人が全滅した中でたった一人、あなただけが生き残ってしまったとしたら、どうしますか？

この本は、カリフォルニア地方のネィティブ・アメリカン、ヤヒ族の最後の男「イシ」の生い立ちについて書かれたものです。ゴールド・ラッシュ以降、ヤヒ族は白人との戦争によって人口を減らしつづけました。やがて戦争は一方的な虐殺となり、ヤヒ族の社会は壊滅しました。イシを含む数名のみが徹底した潜伏生活を続けましたが、数十年を経てイシ一人が生き残ったのです。２０世紀のアメリカに突然姿を現した野生インディアンとして、イシがもてはやされる結果となったのは皮肉な運命といえるでしょう。

歴史書、文化人類学の入門書としても、あるいは常に矜持を保ち続けた男の生き様を知る書としても、すばらしい作品です。著者はシオドーラ・クローバー。ＳＦ作家で、著者の娘にあたるル・グウィンが序文を寄せています。

インディアンとその部族との生き様は、私たちに深い反省の念を呼び覚ます。むろんアイヌその他の少数民族を迫害した日本人とその子孫にも、無縁の話ではない。

内容のすばらしさに比して訳が悪すぎ、一般的にはとても通読できる本ではない。岩波は改めて他の訳者を求め、この名著を幅広い読者を得る努力をすべきである。
