「才能プラス努力」が成功の近道であることは見易い道理であるとしても、本書を読んで、小平博士の偉大な達成は、それに加えて真っ直ぐな気持ちと生き生きとした好奇心そして楽天性を保ち続けたことに依るものであることがよく理解できた。（そして、これらこそは今日の日本において青少年が最も保持することの困難な心的要素ではないのか。）「専門バカでないものは唯のバカである」（１４８頁）という博士の言葉とともに、かみしめたいと思う。

数学は好きなのに出来ない。そんな私にとって、好きだから学んでいくうちにフィールズ賞まで受賞してしまったという著者は、大変羨ましい。当然のことながら「好きだから勉強する」だけでは「秀でる」ための必要条件ではあっても十分条件ではない。この本には、小平氏が数学において世界的に評価を得るまでになった、「好き」以外の条件が隠されている。

例えば、小平氏の周りの交友関係であったり、かなり早い時期から高等数学の本に触れていたり、また、数学の大学院を目指す学生がするような勉強法を早くから自然と実践していたり、など、やはり、小平氏ほどの人物は、若い頃から凡人とは違うものだと感心させられる。こうした小平氏成功の秘訣は、文中にさりげなく語られている。この本は、決して氏の自慢話でも人々の努力を鼓舞するような啓蒙書でもない。むしろ、こうした成功の秘訣にはそれほど触れずに、氏の生い立ちと、アメリカでの生活が淡々と語られている。それは、この本がそもそも日経新聞の「私の履歴書」で氏が執筆した内容に加筆して作られたものであるからだろう。

本文中に隠された氏の成功要因については、やはり数学者である上野健爾氏が巻末に付した解説を読むとより一層明らかになるに違いない。

こうした氏の数学へのひたむきな姿勢にふれると、何か元気が湧いてくる。類似の本としてお勧めのものに、新潮文庫から出ている藤原正彦氏のエッセイがある。より、数学的な話とともに数学者の伝記が読みたい場合、サイモンシン著の「フェルマーの最終定理」などもお勧め。

4.0 out of 5 stars いろんな数学者が出てきます, 2002/5/30
小平邦彦氏は数学者であり、日本人初のフィ―ルズ賞の受賞者である。氏のライフヒストリーを自分で書いたものである。経歴から見ても天才と言われるのだろうが、本人による自伝は淡々とした語りである。数学者は強烈な個性の持主、言葉を変えれば“変人”のイメージが強いが、良識あふれる人柄である。

この本の面白いところは、小平邦彦氏に関わった数学者が多く出てくるところである。しかも写真付である。また写真が微妙にぶれているところから、小平氏本人が取ったものと思われる。アインシュタインの写真も微妙にぶれているところが面白い。

しかし、文系の私としてはもう少し人生の葛藤や家族の関係などに触れて欲しいなあと思う点があったので★を一つ減点しました。しかし、この本を読むと小平邦彦氏は人柄のよい性格だったのだなあ、と思うのです。
