身近な誰かの理不尽な死を、人はどのように乗り越えていくのか、あるいは受け入れていけるのか。本書が告発するものは、私たちが何気なく、あるいは熟慮して口にする慰めのことば、そのほとんどが用をなさず、むしろ遺族にとっては傷口に塗られる塩でしかないという残酷な現実である。同じ経験を経ない限り、私たちの共感は叶わないのだろうか？　だとすれば、それは絶望そのものだ。どこまで行っても、一人一人の世界は違い、それぞれの経験は異なるのだから。私たちは人を慰めることはできない。そして、慰められることも。ああ、私たちはあまりに無力で、孤独すぎる。けれど残酷な本書の湛える優しさは、そんな悲しみに、こう囁く。「それでも、気配を感じたとき、きっと人は生きられる」。世界にあるものは、けしてことばだけではない。そこには、優しい風の気配がある。

若林さんがみた遺族の悲しみ，やさしさが
平易な，奥深い文章でつづられています。
こういう文章を書き記すこと自体が
大変だったと思います。
これほど平易でしかも奥深いのは
ご自身の中で体験を血肉にしてきたからですね。
遺族の人生を共有しながら生きてこられた証
という印象を持ちました。
