物語の構成が「大学内部のドタバタ劇」と「唯野教授による文学批評講義」でワンセットになっています。

前半のドタバタ劇と後半の講義のテンションの違いが非常に印象的です。私が読んだのはハードカバー版ですが、本のカバーやレイアウト、注釈の部分まで学術書のパロディになっているところも面白かったです。

講義は純粋な講義としても楽しめるものになっていて、文学部出身の私としては当時の雰囲気を思い出しながら読んでしまいました。
同様に大学に通っていた当時の先生方の顔を思い出しては、「あの人たちもこんな馬鹿馬鹿しいことやってたのかな？」と多少本気で考えました。助手が刃物を持って暴れまわるところや、エイズ差別の部分は多少現実離れしていますが、その他いろいろな細かい部分で妙なリアリティを感じさせます。

もし、文芸評論や現代思想がどのようなものか、勉強してみたいと思ったら、筒井康隆氏による本書をお奨めしたい。実は本書は大学・アカディミズムの風刺であり、文芸批評・思想の研究のパロディなのであるが、筒井氏の力量によって凡百の入門書を見事にまとめあげてしまったのである。まさに贋作が本物よりもすばらしいできばえだったというメタ・ノンフィクションと言えよう。

19世紀の文豪フロベールのマイナーな短編「ブヴァールとペキュシェ」の現代版の感もある。固い批評はぬきにしてパロディ・ユーモア作家の大家である筒井氏の作品だけのおもしろさは保証できる

大学学長までがセクハラで捉まるなど、大学教員たちのセクハラや愚行が治まらない。日本の将来はどうなるのかと心配だ。退屈と怒りを同時に癒そうとて、もう一度笑いたくて、怒りたくて、本書を読んだ。教師になる前、若いときに読んだときは、ただあははあははと笑っていたが、読み返すほど、本書は大学人の資質や本性を底の底から予測的に描き出していたのではないかと、慄然とした。ドタバタナンセンス、せいぜいパロディとして読んだ向きは、今一度本書を警世の書として読み直すことをお薦めしたい。
