　和歌は「恋を歌う装置」であった。今ならさしずめｅメール。マンボウならぬリンボウ先生の道案内で「日本古典」がその艶めかしい裸身を露わにする。──柏木の夢に現れた唐猫は「獣の夢を見るのは懐妊の予兆」という民間伝承を踏まえてのことだという。この柏木と女三の宮の罪深い恋の一部始終を語り終えて林望のいわく。

《ともかく『源氏物語』は、どこをとってもこういうふうに、委曲を尽して恋の心を描き出している。古今これほどに人心の機微をうがった作品はまたとない。この物語が、日本文学の歴史の上で、いやもっと広く世界の文学史のなかでの奇跡だ、と私が思うのは、まさにこの理由による。》

「恋」こそは日本文学の伝統的テーマ。『古事記』の神話から出ている。恋は神代の昔から激しいものであった。　　
　日本の最古の歌集『万葉集』は正直に恋心を歌ってやまない。名歌「あかねさす」は額田王と大海人皇子との相聞歌。この歌の「袖振る」は恋を確実なものにする呪術であったと指摘する。
　和歌は本来、声に出して朗々と歌う『古今和歌集』の情緒纏綿。『新古今和歌集』の藤原定家の絶唱に象徴されるエロス。それら祖先たちの感性が現代の歌謡曲やポップスの歌にまで引き続いてくる豊かな「歌の鉱脈」であったとみる。
　また、恋の教科書だった『伊勢物語』、恋の文学の最高峰『源氏物語』、光源氏の色好みにも光と影がある。歴史的悲運に弄ばれた女性の「あはれ」を語る『平家物語』の著名なところに焦点をしぼって本書は初心者向けに書かれている。
　古典を教える先生ももっと面白く、噛み砕いて古今に通じる「恋」を読み解いてほしいものだ。
