　著者は地球物理学者である。研究のため大西洋の小国アイスランドに通っており、この国に詳しい。物理学者はなぜ文章が上手いのだろう。湯川博士をはじめ、物理学者には名文家が多いように思う。本書も、アイスランドの地理、社会、自然、産業など幅広い分野を、実にわかりやすく解説していて、アイスランドはこの世の理想的な国に思えてくる。いや実際にそうなのだと思う。本書を読んで思わずアイスランドの旅行案内を取り寄せてしまった。読者にこういう行動を取らせるのは、本としては成功なのだろう。

　アイスランドに関する書籍は少ない。旅行ガイドもないに等しい。本書並にアイスランドについて書かれている本は、アイスランド政府観光局が発行しているガイドブックくらいなものと思う。しかし、それは書店では購入できず、入手にとても手間のかかる代物だ。本書はアイスランドに関する情報を、幅広く網羅し、かつ気軽に入手できる貴重な書籍と言える。

　「地震と火山の島国」と言えば日本のことだが、この本のテーマ、アイスランドはそれを上回る地震と火山の小さな島国だ。地震や火山を知るために、地球を知るために、と思って読んでみた。

　なるほど、プレートや海嶺の話もおもしろいが、読めば読むほど私はアイスランドの人々が羨ましく感じられた。軍隊のない小さな島で幸せに過ごす人々。火山と上手につきあいながら気持ちよく温泉につかる人々。自国語を大切にして文化的な生活を送る人々。麦はとれなくとも酪農と漁業で豊かに暮らす人々。厳しい環境の中で育まれた人々のやさしさが心にしみる。寒い国だけど、あたたかな体温が伝わってくる。

　しかし、この国の度重なる災害の規模はすさまじい。第6章「この国にとっての危機」を読めばその凄さがわかる。島村教授は災害の様子を具体的な数字をあげて科学者らしく要領よく伝えてくれる。迫力ある記述だ。本書のクライマックスだろう。

　同じく地震と火山の島国、日本はどうか。人々は幸せになれるのだろうか。エピローグ「小さな国に学ぶ」は私たち日本人に考えるヒントと未来への的確な指針を与えている。

国際標準化の会議で、アイスランドの大学へ行きました。
アイスランドでは、ブルーラグーンという温泉に入りました。
ちょっと大きめの池全体が、温泉で、水着を着て入浴しました。
アイスランドの大学には、国立図書館が併設されていて、いろいろな文献をアイスランド語に翻訳していました。
地震と火山と温泉という日本と同じような自然環境を抱えながら、寒い地方で文化を守ろうとしている姿は、少し感動しました。
アイスランドに行った後で、この本のことを知ったのが、少し残念でした。
