　砂糖を通して世界史を語る試み。
　なかなか切れ味が良く、大航海時代以来の５００年ばかりを、さっと概観できている。とりわけイギリスの歴史を相当叙述できているのは感心してしまう。

　地球の端と端からもたらされた中国のお茶とカリブ海の砂糖とが、上流階級の流行になる。そうした世界の文物を手に入れられるイギリスの立場、貴族を真似たがる国民性が語られる。

　さらに砂糖入り飲料を飲ませるコーヒーハウスからは、王立協会の科学革命が生まれ、新聞が発展し、ロイズなど保険業が育ち、南海会社のバブルがはじけ、政党までが体を成すに至る。まことに砂糖は１７-１８世紀のイギリスを舞台の下で回していた影の主役であったらしい。

　植民地としてのカリブ諸島、利益のあがる商品としての砂糖、この二つの重要性は、思ったよりも重視しないといかんなーと改めて感じた。

　紅茶に砂糖を入れるという習慣が、世界の富を集めえたイギリスの富裕階級だからこそ可能だった「破天荒なこと」だということをこの本で知った.その砂糖は、カリブ海の植民地に設けられた広大なプランテーションで、アフリカからだまされて奴隷船にぎゅう詰めにされて運ばれてきた数十万人の若者たちの労苦と犠牲の上に生産されたものであることも.イギリスから独立した米国では紅茶に代わって中南米でとれるコーヒーが広まったこと、それが今のコカコーラにまでつながっていることや、チョコレートが万能薬と考えられ、カトリックの枢機卿が断食の最中でも飲んでよいと許可したことなども興味深い.
　題名のとおり世界の歴史に砂糖という嗜好品がこんなにも影響を及ぼしたのかと驚く.ジュニア新書の1冊だが、視点が広く、文章は分かりやすく、大人が読んでもとても面白い.あえて注文をつければ、砂糖キビ由来の砂糖の話が中心で、テンサイ（ビート）からとる砂糖の発展の歴史にほとんどふれていないのが残念.

最初、ジュニア新書ということで軽い気持ちで読んでいましたが、読みはじめると貿易がいかに甘味と結びついているかがよく分かりました。貿易について知りたいけど、専門書はちょっと敷き居が高いという人向けの貿易入門書でもあり、また雑学フリークをも満足だせる一冊です。
