栗山 民也
1953年東京都生まれ。演出家、新国立劇場演劇研修所所長。早稲田大学文学部演劇学科卒業。1980年、『ゴドーを待ちながら』で演出家デビュー。『GHETTO/ゲットー』の演出で読売演劇大賞最優秀演出家賞・紀伊國屋演劇賞・芸術選奨文部大臣新人賞、『エヴァ・帰りのない旅』などで毎日芸術賞千田是也賞、新国立劇場「時代と記憶」シリーズなどの演出で第一回朝日舞台芸術賞、『喪服の似合うエレクト』で朝日舞台芸術賞のグランプリを受賞。ほかに、井上ひさし「東京裁判三部作」などの演出を担当。2000年7月~07年8月まで、新国立劇場演劇部門芸術監督を務める(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

私は演劇については全くの門外漢で、芸事（芸術？）といえば普段は音楽しか触れていない。しかし立読みついでに買った本書は非常によい買い物だった。演劇という世界もまた不思議なものだと思った。演技をするとき俳優がなぜ「他人のふりをして、他人のせりふを口にする」のか、勿論それは歌を歌うときでも同じなのだ。なぜ他人が作った歌をうたって幸せになり、あるいは聴く人の心を打つことが出来るのか、芸事というものが持つその不思議さに筆者は演劇の分野から文章で肉薄しようとしているように見受けられる。
文中、第二次世界大戦中にユダヤ人強制収容所で劇団が作られていたという挿話が語られるが人間というものはつくづく奥深いものだと思わされました。感謝。

実際の舞台では観客は俳優の演技しか見ることはできません。俳優は演出家が動かしているのですが、さて演出家本人はそれをどういう創作活動と考えているのか。脚本との関係はどうなのか。著者の豊富で多彩な経験を背景に、とても分かりやすく、そして力強く演出の仕事の意味を伝えています。舞台を見る目が膨らむ作品です。

２００８年１冊目が、この本。

年末に、友人が出演する舞台を見に行きまして、演出家に対し
「おまえ、作品全然、読んでねぇだろう」とその時、激しい
憤りを心に抱き、タイトルに惹かれ、勢いで買ってしまいました
（当然、友人には「面白かったよ〜」と大人の対応をしました）。

まず、実績があるだけに、一言一句に説得力があります。
しかも、演出家ゆえに言葉に長けているからでしょうか、
文章が綺麗で、読みやすい。

現在、お芝居をやっている人、演出をされている人には、
必須の本だと思われます。演出方法の一案や、海外演劇事情など、
眼からウロコの内容が、盛りだくさんです。是非、一読を！

また、お芝居に興味のない方にも、雑学を仕入れるイメージで
お読みくださいませ。


【補足の感想】
　筆者も嘆かれておりますが、
　日本の俳優事情は、欧米と比べると、
　環境も、社会における地位も、お寒いかぎりですね。
　
　日本の場合、
　活動家であったり、暴力団が芸能に関わっていたり、した
　特殊な歴史もあり、まだその名残が拭い去れてはいないからでしょう。
　
　また「大勢の人前で何かをするのは恥ずかしい」
　みたいな固定観念（これ遺伝なんですかね？それとも、幼少期に
　なにかそういった教育をしていますか。記憶から抜け落ちているだけ？）
　も根強いモノが、もう文化としてありますから。
　
　まずは、普通の人が、普通にお休みや、
　アフターファイブに、お芝居が出来るような環境を作りたいモノですね。
　
　あとは、俳優陣の代表格ともいえる芸能人の方々、
　普通の暮らしをして下さい。クスリに手を出すなんてもっての外ですよ！
