　日本に金属がもたらされた弥生時代から幕末、明治までを、それぞれの時代に象徴的な金工品を例に、材料工学の面から紐解く意欲作。
　斬新な視点だが、非常にわかりやすく理路整然としていて好感がもてる。後半の貨幣の変遷、黄銅（銅＋亜鉛）の登場の話が興味深い。日本人が独自に得とくしていった冶金技術の高度さに眼からウロコの感。なかなかの良書である。

日本の考古学の金属史について，金属材料学の立場から概説した．文学部考古学教室による金属史に疑問を感じていた筆者には，目の覚めるような内容となっている．今までの金属史は全面的に書き改められるであろう．と同時に考古学はもはや文系からは発展することが不可能とも宣言している．今後は理工学の広い教養を基礎に考古学が展開するものと認識した．採鉱から精錬，加工までの過程を歴史としてとらえると同時に，微量分析技術を駆使して，本質に迫っていく．日本独自の技術が渡来人とともに生まれていく過程は特に興味深い．本書は考古学者にとって必読書である．これから若い考古を志す者は理工学の基礎を系統的に身につけることが必修とすべきであることを本書は明瞭に語っている．これ以前の考古学書が色あせて見えるほど，著者の教養に脱帽する．名著といえるだろう．

最後は名古屋城の金の鯱鉾の話題でおわる。
尾張名古屋は城でもつという落ちでしょうか。
