注意したいのが、本書は、
「アラビアンナイト（千一夜物語）の内容を紹介する本」
ではなく、
「アラビアンナイトとは何かを徹底的に追求する本」
だということ。

つまり、アラビアンナイトがどのように成立し、その後世界中に広まって行ったのかを、主に中東からヨーロッパに広まる際のあれこれを中心に説き起こす一冊なのだ。

とまぁ、私も勘違いして読み始めたクチだが、それでも本書は十分に面白かった。

アラブ世界ではあまり高く評価されていなかったアラビアンナイトを、ヨーロッパ人たちが興味や憧れ、あるいは一攫千金のために恣意的に翻訳し、カスタマイズしていった結果、今のようなアラビアンナイトの形ができていくという過程は非常に興味深い。
そしてそれがアラブに再度伝えられるという流れは、自国文化のよいところは外から見ないとわからない（浮世絵など）ということの好例と言えるのかもしれない。

ヨーロッパのオリエンタリズムの変遷もよくわかり、アラビアンナイトそのもののことだけでなく、ある文化と別の文化との関係、文物の伝播の過程についてなど、あらゆる意味で示唆の多い一冊。

　１８世紀初頭にヨーロッパに紹介されたアラビアンナイト。アラビアでの成立は９世紀ということだから、異本も数多く存在する。そこにヨーロッパ側の事情が絡んで錯綜し、世界文学化していく過程が紹介される。
　１８世紀以降のヨーロッパ文化史と、ヨーロッパオリエンタリズムの様相が楽しい。

アラジンの舞台は中国であった。
一般的な日本人の持つアラジンのイメージは神秘の中東といったところか。
しかし、アラブ人や西洋人には当方のイメージを投影される存在である。
すでに地域を越え、世界文学となったアラビアンナイト。
その成立と受容の過程に迫った書である。

前半はアラビアンナイトの成立過程や各種版本や翻訳など書誌学的な記述が続き、興味のない人にとっては読むのが億卯になるかもしれない部分である。
個人的な興味の所在とも関係してくるとは思うが、私はやはりアラビアンナイトがいかに世界文学に成長したか、どのように受容されていったかに触れる後半の方が面白く感じた。

中東では俗文学として高い地位を与えられなかったアラビアンナイトが西洋では広く受け入れられたのか。西洋での成功を受けて中東世界内部でもアラビアンナイトの成長と変容が始まる。西洋と中東を行き来するうちにアラビアンナイトは世界文学としての地歩を確立していく。
そもそも各地に伝承されていたお話の集大成がアラビアンナイトである。一人の著者の筆にならないことがその後の世界展開に有益であったのかもしれない。

日本でのアラビアンナイト受容も日本と中東世界の典型的な事例である。
西洋を通じた中東像。そこには西洋が持つような複雑なイスラム世界への視点はない。エキゾチックな異界以上の意味を持っていない。あくまでも世界の目を取り入れようと努力する日本の姿が見られるだけである。
思えば、唐天竺の時代から中東は遠い存在である。
現代も日本が直接中東を眺めているのか、西洋とはまた別の視点を提供しうる存在になり得るのか。
