タイトルからすると武田親子のライフヒストリーを辿っていくような展開を予期させるが、
本書は多数の古文書を紹介し、研究者はどのようにその古文書の真偽を判別し、解読していくのかを解説していく。その過程で信玄の癖、筆不精な性格、実はかなり臆病な気質、執筆のプロである右筆たちのちょっと間抜けなミスなどが見えてきて面白い。

武田に限らず戦国武将というものは大河ドラマや歴史小説などを通して偉人伝、武勇伝として語られ、イメージが形成されてきている。だが、著者が「おわりに」において語っているように、本書が示す歴史像は、信玄の遠大な戦略という枠組みを設定した上で個別の事件、事例、文書をその中に位置づけていくというものではない。むしろ多数の文書を丹念に比較し読み解いていった結果、信玄や上杉、今川氏真や北条、織田信長の感情・人情を読み取り、事実の流れを説明している。結果、従来英雄としてイメージされてきた戦国武将の人間味にあふれた実像が垣間見えてくる。へえ、って感じ。

あと、本書を面白くしているのはやはり書き方にあるように思う。研究者の視点、研究の手法、研究の大変さと醍醐味を紹介しつつ研究のプロセスを読者と共に追体験させるような本書の描き方にはつい惹きこまれてしまう。読み物としてとても面白かった。

本書は、武田信玄・勝頼に焦点を当てたものであるが、新書では珍しくかなり実証的な研究過程が記されている。
文書をどのように扱うのか、またそこにはどのような問題・難しさがあるのか、そういった歴史家の仕事が分かりやすく綴られている。また、信玄のような人口に膾炙した人物はややもするとイメージ語りされがちだが(プロでさえそうである)、そういった傾向に待ったをかけている点で、学問的にも優れた作品である。
歴史を志す人間はもちろん、すこしでも歴史に興味のある人は、是非本書を手にとって貰いたい。

古文書を勉強している人には大変に興味深い内容です。
古文書の内容を深く吟味することが如何に大切かを教えてくれます。

書状の様式に、竪切紙と切紙があること。またこれの使い分け。
同様に朱印と花押の使い分け。
文書には、手紙系と書類系があること。
偽文書の判断方法。
年代の判定のやり方。などなどが説明されています。
また、古文書の読み方についても解説しています。
読み方によっては正反対の解釈をしてしまうことを例を挙げて説明しています。
じっくり読んでいくと、文書の裏側に隠されている内容が読めてくるという、
この説明の件には、わくわくしたものを感じました。
