インフルエンザウイルスとは何か、今何が問題でどのような対策があるのか、かつてのインフルエンザ流行の歴史的状況はどうだったのか、きわめて平易に解説されています。人間の寿命を上回る潜伏期間を持つウイルスがあれば生涯発病せず「新たな毒性の強いウイルスがヒト社会へ侵入する際の防波堤となってくれる可能性がある」とウイルスとヒトとの共存の可能性まで言及しています。難しいことをできるだけ易しく説明しようとする著者の姿勢には共感が持てます。

本書のエピローグで描かれた世界―――「もうひとつの世界」―――は、架空の話でありながら、私たち東南アジアの国に暮らすものにとって、真に迫る物語でした。東南アジアのある国で新型インフルエンザが出現する。それに対しＷＨＯを始めとする国際社会が、どのように対応するか。そして、その結末は・・・。
新型インフルエンザの流行は、世界的な出来事ですが、一方で、多くの人が一生懸命になって働いている。そんなことを知ることができました。無知は人々をパニックに導くだけに違いありません。本書の中にもある「適切な危機感」を共有することがいまこそ必要なのではないでしょうか。そんなことを考えさせられた一冊でした。

一冊の本がアメリカの大統領に一つの危機意識を抱かせたという。危機とは、世界的に流行するかもしれない新型インフルエンザだった。著者は、なぜ、この新型インフルエンザがアメリカの大統領をして、それほどの危機意識を抱かせることになったか、歴史、政治、医学、生態学の視点から論じる。「適切な危機感」を共有するために。身も蓋もない話だが、人の感想を読むより自分で一読した方が得る物の多い本だ。

帯の「適切な危機感」は寺田寅彦の言葉だという「正当な危機感」のほうが、微妙にしっくりする気もする。
