漢字伝来
日本で漢字文化が確立されるまでの軌跡をたどる。

無文字社会を生きた古代日本人は、中国で創られた漢字を、自分たちの言語を表す文字として採用した。中国語とは言語構造の異なる日本語を漢字で書き写すのは無理があり、様々な障壁にぶつかったが、試行錯誤を重ねて乗り越えた。音読、訓読の技を取得し、万葉仮名による表記法をつかみ、カタカナ、ひらがなを案出した。最終的に漢字とかなで自在に日本語を綴るようになり、“日本語化”に成功した。

一方、同様に漢字文化の波を受けたアジア近隣諸国には、漢字を捨てた国、漢字を真似て文字を創ったものの、利用が途絶えた国などがある。漢字を巧みに利用して自国の言語に適合させた日本は特異な存在であることを示す。

久しぶりに「新書の醍醐味」を味あわせてくれる本。
文句なしに良書だ。

漢字の伝来、そしてその後のカナ文字の発生について扱った書籍なら、他にもあるだろう。
だがそれは、あくまで日本国内の事情にとどまっていた気がする。

だが中国の周辺には、日本と同じように漢字という圧倒的な存在に影響された幾多の民族がいる。
それら周辺諸民族の漢字受け入れの過程と比較して初めて、日本のそれがどういう意味を持っているのかがわかった気がする。

注釈も興味深いし、オマケとして付け加えられた中国漢字音についての記述も面白い。

　文字を持たなかった私たちの祖先。中国生まれの漢字に遭遇した。この漢字を自分たちの言語を書き表す文字として採用した。外来文字の導入。漢字の日本語化。この道程を追跡し、私たちの祖先が〈どのようにして〉漢字・漢文を自家薬籠中のものとし、〈なぜ〉それができたのかを、日本語・中国語の言語構造の違いや古代朝鮮の文化的影響、東アジア諸国の漢字との取り組み方なども視野に入れ、エピソードを織り込みながら探っている。宣命書きの登場で日本語の〈送り仮名〉を書き、万葉仮名で日本語を書き、片仮名・平仮名の誕生を見た。 世界に類を見ない巧みな異文化の摂取・吸収。本家・本元もさることながら、巧妙日本の受容の手口に感嘆せざるをえない。本書はその辺りを易しく簡明に解説してくれている（雅）

　文字のない日本列島に中国、朝鮮の影響を受けて漢字が入ってきたのは文化史上最大の出来事と言ってよいだろう。
　日本語と中国語は、音韻も統語構造も全く異なるものでありながら、まばゆいばかりの中国文明の象徴としての漢字に日本人は憧れ、積極的に取り込み、自らのものとしようと数百年の歳月をかけて、ついにはひらがな、カタカナという固有の文字文化を生み出した。
　そこからは中国文明の偉大さと我々の先人の自発性のぶつかりあいのドラマがみてとれる。
　本書はこのドラマを書誌文献学、考古学の事例を挙げつつビビッドに描きだす。
