　本書は、２０世紀１００年間の邪馬台国論争史である。内藤湖南の学説を基軸として、さまざまな説の論点を明らかにしている。
　内藤は、久米邦武が邪馬台国九州説に固執して、文献学的考証をないがしろにする論調を批判した。畿内大和説の内藤は、その論文「卑弥呼考」で〈卑弥呼神功旧説引戻し論〉として提示されたものである。ただ、ここでは卑弥呼は倭姫命に比定するという全く新たな説を立てている。
　その後〈文献学的考証から考古学的研究へ〉時代は大きく変わっている。「考古学雑誌」に続々と登場した邪馬台国論。最近１０年間は奈良・黒塚古墳出土の三角縁神獣鏡３３面などから考古学を根拠に畿内説が勢いを増している。桜井市の箸墓は卑弥呼の墓。三角縁神獣鏡は卑弥呼の鏡。それらが根拠となりうるか。
　ともあれ、本書は、内藤が論じた「卑弥呼考」に重点を置いて、前世紀１００年の中での邪馬台国論の意義と、斯学への貢献が記述されている。

数十年来、邪馬台国には興味を持っていて色々な学者による自説を述べたものは読んできたが、その研究史に関しては初めてであった。これほど詳しくなくてもいいのではないかと感じさせるほどに、この著者は学者の日記、書簡なども引用して記載してある。そのせいか、結局どれが正論になるのかがはっきりしていない本である、勿論邪馬台国・卑弥呼の真実など判明不可能という説もあるが。
