上巻では物理学全体を古代ギリシャ時代まで遡って書かれていたが、この下巻では現代物理に焦点が絞られています。筆者自体も現役の物理学者であるため、筆者の個人的体験なども織り交ぜながら、20世紀の現代物理の発展において偉業を達成した天才達の素顔や、彼らが世界大戦が二度も起こった20世紀をどのように生きてきたか、という事が非常に丁寧に、そしてとてもわかりやすい文章で書かれています。

これらの偉人達については参考資料も多く、また筆者の個人的な思い入れも強いのでしょう。登場人物ひとりひとりについて、非常に多くのエピソードが紹介され、それらエピソードを通して筆者が感じ取った人間像が実に優しく表現されています。アインシュタインが離婚の慰謝料としてノーベル賞の賞金を当てにしていたのは有名な話ですが、それ以外にも偉人達の人間味あふれる物語をこの本で楽しんでください。

文系の人にとって理論、法則などの中身の説明は分かりづらいところはありました。
しかし、物理学者の日常生活を記述するなどして、自然科学に疎い人に
「アレルギー反応」を起こさせない工夫をし、最後まで読ませてくれました。
政治・社会と科学の狭間で翻弄されまさに「天国と地獄」を味わったオッペンハイマーなど
科学者に対して一つの政治的なものさしのみで評価するのではなく（例、マッカーシー時代）、
複数の価値観に照らし合わせて彼･彼女の功績を我々現代人は認識していかねばならないと思いました。

　上巻に引き続き、アインシュタイン、ボーア、キュリー夫人、朝永振一郎、ゲルマンなどの現代の著名な物理学者を追う。
　さすがに現代にくだるにつれて、その学説や理論は難解、複雑なものになってきているが、筆者の口調は丁寧で、図なども多用されていて一般教養としての要点は押さえられるだろう。
　筆者自身の経験を含め、それぞれの人物の血の通ったエピソードが多く、非常に親しみを感じつつも、科学の楽しみに触れることができる。
