英語を母語としながら、現代日本語文学の作家として活躍する著者が、独自の感性で万葉集の約50首を英訳し、エッセイを加えた。

例えば、「田児の浦ゆ うち出でて見れば 真白にそ…」の歌。「真白に」だけならばpure whiteでいいが、驚きと畏敬がこもった「真白にそ」を表現するため、white, pure whiteと訳した。「あをによし 奈良の京は 咲く花の にほふがことく 今盛りなり」という歌では、「今盛りなり」の訳語に花と同じ語源を持つflourishを選んだ。自然の美しさ、明るさを比喩に、自文化をおおらかに主張する原作の雰囲気を上手に伝えている。

英語で読むことで、万葉集が描き出す雄大で厳かなイメージが、より一層広がるように感じられる。

万葉集というのは私にとって外国語のようで、すらすらとは読めない。しかし著者が英語に翻訳したその思考過程を追うことで、万葉集の世界に魅了されていく。

天皇をおおらかに歌い、豊かな自然に託して恋や悲しみや、人生を歌う。とても洗練されたセンスのある表現者たちのわざから当時の日本人たちがすでに現代人と変わることのない、普遍的ともいえる力、感性を持っていたことが伺える。

ときおりどきりとするようなエロスやはっとするような力強い表現を発見し、心地よく打ちのめされるかもしれない。中国と日本を行き来するスケールの大きな視野を持った米国人の著者のおかげで、その驚きを日本語と英語の両方で体験できるのだ。この一冊は。

右に万葉集から抜粋した歌を、左にその英訳を載せるという対訳の形式で、それについて著者が翻訳において辿った過程や感じたこと、苦心などを解説していくという構成です。現代日本人にとって万葉集の原文というのは大抵読むのが難しく、むしろ、英訳のほうを見て漸く意味が判然とすることも多いのではないでしょうか。筆者が簡潔な英語表現で万葉集の原文のニュアンスを映し出していく様を見ていると、さすがに英語の母語話者は違うなと感心させられますが、翻訳過程に関する著者自身の説明に耳を傾けているうちに、実は本当に違うのは、むしろ原文の日本語に対する敏感さのほうなのではないかとも思えてきます。改めて翻訳という過程が解釈・鑑賞と表裏一体のものであるということを痛感させられます。この書は単に芸術的観点からのみではなく、比較言語的あるいは比較文化的観点から見ても非常に多くの示唆に富んでおり、普段は詩や歌にそこまで関心を持たない人でも十分楽しめる一冊だと思いました。

久しぶりに萬葉集の歌をまじめに読んだ。そう言えば、萬葉旅行の委員をやっている時も、犬養先生の朗読で耳からはいって来た歌ばかりだったから、こんなにまじめに読んだのは初めてかも知れない。

形式は例によって、右に日本語左に英語見開き。今回はその次の２ページに、歌の魅力が翻訳の難しさ面白さと共に解説されている。この文章が萬葉集への愛があふれるとともに、言葉というものの本質を突いている文章で素晴らしい。歌の鑑賞自身は（特に知らない歌は）かなり苦労しました。英語の方も、詩というのは、ボキャブラリーとその芸術的な使用が勝負な訳で、私の英語力ではピンと来ないものもかなりあった。それでも、リービ氏が苦労して素晴らしい表現を紡ぎ出していることが私にも分かる歌がいくつかあって、それだけでも読む価値は十分ある。

翻訳に多少疑問を感じたものもある。対訳とは恐ろしいもので、特に詩歌のような短い形式では、対応を追えるので、誰でもこう言う感想を持つことができる。考えてみれば、ものすごくチャレンジングな形式だ。これは、私の独りよがりの萬葉集の解釈のせいかも知れないし、英語表現への理解が間違っているせいかもしれない。ほとんどはそうなのだろう。本書の解説の部分は読者の疑問に対する答えという側面もある。ここはどうしてこの単語を使ったのか、この語順にしたのかの解説は、英語に対する理解を大いに深める。それでも、限られた紙面の中で答えの得られなかった疑問もあって、著者から直接解説してもらえたら、どんなに楽しいだろうと思った。

25年ほど前に、犬養先生のお宅で英訳の萬葉集を見て、そのレベルの低さに驚いたのだが、リービ英雄という日本語と萬葉集への深い理解と英語の豊かな表現力を持った翻訳者を得て、素晴らしい英語になったこと、そして、その解説を読むことができることは、英語に興味を持つ（まあ、苦しめられもしているのですが）萬葉集ファンとして、大変な幸せである。
