著者略歴 (「BOOK著者紹介情報」より)

石黒 マリーローズ
1943年レバノン・ベイルートに生まれる。聖ヨーセフ大学哲学科卒業、アンスティテュー・カトリック・ドゥ・パリ大学修了。外交官の語学教授やクウェート王室付きの教師などを歴任。1972年来日し、翌年に日本人実業家と結婚。1983年レバノン文化教育センターを設立、館長となる。社会学と言語学の研究者で、大阪大学で教鞭をとりはじめ、現在、英知大学教授、大阪教育大学講師。1989年神戸市の「国際交流賞」を受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　著者との出会いは『キリスト教文化の常識』が最初だったが、それ以降、よくもまあ似たような内容の本ばかり出し続けるものだと感心する。本書など既発表のものの焼き直しといってもいいくらいの内容だ。新鮮味がない。またその話ですか、石黒さん？

　キリスト教文化の優位を信じて疑わない姿勢も相変わらず。あなたはこれを知らないでしょう。そんなことではキリスト教徒の使う英語は理解できません。これが判らなければ西洋文化を知ったことにはなりません。くどいほど知らないでしょう、判らないでしょうとくり返すので、ばかにされているように感じる。

　キリスト教社会では政治家やジャーナリストに限らず、たしかに宗教的表現をすることが多い。世俗的音楽の歌詞にも出てくることがあるし、幼い頃からたたき込まれて染みついているのだ。しかしそればかりではない。キリスト教社会では敬虔な信者であることを示したほうが有利だという計算もある。聖書の言葉の引用はその手段のひとつなのだ。それが異教徒に通じないのは当たり前と思うべきだろう。グローバル化を云々するなら、異教徒にキリスト教文化を押しつけるのではなく、宗教色のない表現を用いるのが筋というものだ。

　ほんとにキリスト教の知識のない人、なおかつキリスト教に憧れている人が読むなら、あるいは抵抗がないかも知れない。しかしそれ以外の人は内容の薄さにがっかりするだろうし、聖書を読め、真の神を知れという著者の勧めを余計なお世話と感じるだろう。

　キリスト教圏における新聞などを読む楽しさが更に増します。
　勉強の助けになりそうです。
　イギリスのディズレーリ首相の
　「私は『旧約聖書』と『新約聖書』の間の失われたぺージだ」
　との発言が面白かったです。
　このほかにも機知に富んだ表現がたくさんあります。

西洋文明のバックボーンには2000年の歴史を持つキリスト教がある。したがって西洋の文化や歴史をよく理解する上で、キリスト教の基本的な知識が欠かせない。日本のキリスト教人口はわずか１％だから、99％の日本人に西洋の文化をさらに一層面白くよく理解してもらうために､聖書の言葉に親しんで欲しいという願いでこの本は書かれている。

世界の出来事がリアルタイムで報道され､情報があふれる昨今、日本人にとって英語が出来ても十分理解しきれない多くの事例を、わかりやすく楽しく説明してくれる一冊である。
