　でもちょっとグロかなとも思いましたが、やっぱり写真の魅力には代え難い。

なんでも百聞は一見にしかず。目からはいる情報は強烈です。我ら大人でも、ほ~こんなふうになってるんか、と感心することしきりなので、子どもならもっと得るものが大きいかも知れません。きれいな色は解りやすいように着色されたものだということは時が経てば解ってくるでしょう。貴重な写真が手頃な値段で手に入るいい時代だと思いました。星５つ。

まず感じるのは、筆者らの細胞に対する溢れんばかりの愛情、まさにオタクの世界です。感情を持たない細胞に感情を抱かせんばかりの思い込みたるや、圧倒するものがあります。少しでも素人にその熱い思いを伝えたい、というのが自らの挿絵に表れています。医学というとなんかはったりをかましているのが大手を振っているように思いがちですが、こういう地味なところから発しているということを知ることができます。科学の叙情、オタクのロマン、細胞の呟き、すべてが相俟って身近な広大な宇宙を体験することができます。これが臨床医学へのちょっとしたヒントまで敷衍できればもっとアピールできたのに、とも思いますが。

　長年組織学の研究と教育に熱意を注いできた著者達の集大成と言える書籍である。何よりも嚆矢となった観察・研究をていねいに述べていることが、授業で頭を悩ます我々にとって助けになる。
　特に電子顕微鏡が実用化される前に腎糸球体にタコ足細胞を見事にスケッチしていたエピソード（当時信用されなかったのは当然かもしれない）と挿図には感銘を覚える。
　高校時代の教科書の冒頭には、必ず動物・植物細胞の図があり、平均的な細胞（そのようなものはあり得ない事が少し勉強を深めるとわかる）が示されている。しかしそれだけで終わってしまっては、多細胞生物の細胞が多様な仕事をこなすために、いかに千変万化とも言える姿と機能を持っているかという、いわば生物学の醍醐味に触れないで先に進んでしまうのだから、実に残念な事と日頃考えている。
　余りにコンパクトに深い内容を限られたページでまとめているためか（特に電子顕微鏡の写真）文章の内容を図から読みとるには、相当の予備知識が必要であるから、本当にこの本の価値を読みとるためには、初歩的な本も併わせて読む必要があるかも知れない。
