唯一の新撰組研究書といえるだろう。これまでの、歴史学的史料に基づかない新撰組研究に、一石を投じた本であるといえる。

私の知る限り、唯一の歴史家が書いた新撰組の本ではないだろうか。それを新書という限られたスペースにまとめた点も、また高い評価を与えてしかるべきであろう。

ただ、恐るべきは、多くの新撰組ファンが、歴史学とは無縁の人たちで、そういった人たちの中で今までの新撰組関連の本が大きな影響を与えている現状では、この本に書かれている、今までの研究成果（と呼べるかどうかも微妙ではあるが）を気にせず、ある程度史料に基づき筆者が考えた新撰組像を受け入れられないのではないかという危惧が消せないということだけだろうか。

筆者は特に勝海舟研究家として知られており、今までおろそかになりがちだった、近藤捕縛に際して土方が如何な助命工作をしたかという点において、特にこの研究成果が生かされているのではないか。

これから新撰組を研究してみようという人には、ぜひこの本を読んでいただきたい。その際は、文中によく出てくる「いまでは~考えられていたが」という点は無視していて、「あー、そうなのか」くらいに考えていただいて、読んでいただければ良いと思われる。

こう言う本を探していました。
私情を挟まず、現存する資料を基に、個々の感情や状況なども考慮し、
何処までも真実を追っている内容で、やっと見つけたと言う感じです。
実像と虚像と個人の主観が余りに入り乱れていて、本当の近藤勇の姿を
見出せないでいましたが、この本でやっと実像が掴めた気がします。

大河ドラマ「新撰組！」の影響で、いわゆる新撰組モノの小説を３冊読んでみた。ビギナーにとって意外に感じたのは、テレビと違って局長／近藤勇の存在感が希薄なのである。副長／土方歳三はフィクサーで、あくまで新撰組を取り仕切ってきたのは俺なのだ！とばかりに大活躍＆クール。本書を読むと、これまでの歴史書なり小説において、近藤の残したたくさんの書簡が全然活用されていなかったらしい。ということで、本書はコロンブスの卵的に近藤書簡を基軸に、他の資料と照らし合わせながら、改めて新撰組の栄枯盛衰をクロニカルに綴ったものである（らしい。なにぶんビギナーなので）。これまでの新撰組研究の素養があるとより感慨深い読後感が得られるのであろう。親しみやすい新書という体裁でありながら、けっこう専門的である。大河ドラマの今後の展開は丸分かりになってしまった･･･。
