プロローグで問題提起し、エピローグで要点をまとめいる。

章・節の立て方がすばらしく、どこでも好きなところから読めます。
研究文献として読みたい方は、プロローグとエピローグを読み、
特に必要なところをつまみ食いでき、何よりも参考文献がかなり多く、
分野別に分かれている優れものです。

内容は、龍などについての文献より日本史、日本地理史を論じていて、
とても面白い。

日本史・龍・地図・神話・神道論などの多分野から構成されているので、
専門知識としてはもちろん、教養としててもおすすめの一冊です。

我々は昔の日本人も現代と同じ地理感、国土感を持って生きていたような錯覚を抱く。しかし、古来、知識階級でさえ日本の地形を独鈷(細長い仏具)の形にイメージするに過ぎなかった。
日本の龍は、陰陽道の龍、仏教の龍、日本の神を象徴する大蛇の要素が混合したものだが、元冦を機に外敵への危機感が高まり、龍は日本の国土を守る神の化身ともなる。
と同時に、龍は地震をもたらすと怖れられた。やがて近世には地震の原因は大鯰にとって変わられる。
歴史の異境をひもとくユニークな1冊である。

昔、日本列島に住んでいた人たちが、自分たちの暮らす国土（大地）に対してどのようなイメージを抱いていたのだろうか？。それを知ることが、現代の日本国を歴史的に理解するために重要であるという著者の視点はとても面白いと思いました。
　本書は、中世の古地図に基づきこの謎解きを試みていて、そのイメージとは、日本はインド、中国、日本の三国世界の中心で、神仏と深く関係した龍によって守られているという壮大なものであったそうです。
　そういえば、日本では龍と名のつく湖沼や洞窟がやたらとあるが、それらは地下の世界で繋がっていて龍神様の棲むところと信じていたのではないかという推察は面白い。地下で繋がるというイメージは、崇高な天上ではなく、土臭い地下の深いところで、自分たちの心の深層において、人々や、或いはもっと言えば、命あるものは全て繋がっているという、人間の先験的感性を表象している様にも思えます。
　科学が発達した先進国の日本人としては、ご先祖様は微笑ましくもアホだなー、と思ってしまうところですが、そう思った自分たちのどこかにも龍が棲んでいるのかもしれないですね。
