結局のところ、ナチズムやヒトラー神話というのは大衆に夢を見させて幻惑させるユートピア思想だったように思います。

堅実で真面目な議会制民主主義なんか大衆からしたら面白くもなんともありません。
まるで神のような偉大なヒトラーの独裁政治の方が、もっとずっとワクワクできます。

譲歩や妥協を繰り返す周辺諸国との協調外交より、自分勝手な生存権確保のための侵略の方が夢を見れるでしょう。
冷静に考えればそんな馬鹿な!としか言いようがない、ユダヤ人への最終的解決策も一部の人にとってはユートピアの実現に思えたのでしょう。

政治においては、ひたすら退屈でつまらない現実主義に徹するのが一番良いのかもしれません。
夢を見させてくれる政治家や宗教家などは危険度マックスなのです。

ナチズムもマルクス主義も人種主義も個人崇拝も、夢をみさせてくれる悪魔の誘惑です。感情でついていくと、最終的には破滅しちゃいます。

歴史を教訓にして、つまらないなあと退屈しつつ、国会中継なんかを眺めましょう。

　「なぜナチスはドイツで政権を獲得して全体主義国家を形成しえたのか」という問題は、今も残された20世紀最大の問題かもしれない。本書はその問いに言語操作、シンボル操作の領域から答えている。

　面白いのが、ナチス政権下の民衆のジョークの分析だ。確かに実際の抵抗運動につながらない「ガス抜き」的側面を免れないが、ジョークを通して権力を笑い飛ばす民衆のしたたかさはいつの時代でも絶えることはないのだろう。本書を読みながら、ロベルト・ベニーニの映画「ライフ・イズ・ビューティフル」を思い出してしまった。

　本書はヒトラーの演説、映画、教育、ジョーク、夢の観点からナチズムの何たるかを論じている。とくに興味深いのは、ナチズム下で民衆の間で流布していたジョークを取り上げた章と、ナチ時代の人々が見た夢を分析した章だ。この観点は様々な場面に応用されうるものだろう。例えば、昭和前期の人々が見た夢から当時の時代背景を再構成する仕事があるなら読んでみたい。
