作家たるもの、きっちり下調べがなくては佳作など書けない。
これはその下調べの成果である。小説と違って正面切った歴史論である。小細工一切なし。
しかし、軟派に書いていないのに文章がおもしろくなってしまうあたりがこの作家のよさだ。

薄い一冊の中に、佐藤賢一の歴史小説家の哲学がつまっている。新書なのに熱い、ファン必須の一冊だ。むろん歴史初心者にも。

　東北大学西洋史専攻で修士号を得ている佐藤賢一ならではの、史料分析に基づいたダルタニャン像です。

　「三銃士」に描かれた勇猛果敢で友情に篤い好漢ダルタニャンのモデルとなったシャルル・ダルタニャンの一生をいくつかの史料を手がかりに追っていきます。そこから浮かび上がるダルタニャンは、小説中に登場する熱血ガスコーニュ人の姿はそのままに、扱いの難しい要人の護送を命ぜられれば、細やかな配慮によって敵であったはずの護送相手とも意気通じ合う繊細な側面も持ち合わせていました。
　小説ではともすれば猥雑な文章によって読者を物語中に引き込む筆者ですが、このノンフィクションでは比較的抑えた筆致が生き、「史実」のダルタニャンの姿を実に鮮やかに描き出しています。三銃士好き!の人はもっと好きになること請け合いです。

デュマ・ペールの小説ですっかり有名なダルタニャン。彼が実在の人物だったというだけで面白いのに、伝記としてもすっきりとよくまとまっている。失礼だがこの作家は、誰かも書いているように、小説よりノンフィクションのほうがうまいかも知れない。
