この本が出版された年（1999年）、私は胃がんのために胃全摘出と脾摘出手術をうけた。そして、6年半経過、今、大腸がんのために結腸切除術をうけ、自宅療養中である。
『胃がんと大腸がん』というテーマは私のためにつけられたようなものであると言うのが第一の感想。
この本の著者は医師であり、研究者である。
素朴な書きっぷりがいい。さすが先達。
正統派を生きてきた医師のみがもつ自信が裏打ちされている。言いい回しが余裕があり、微笑ましい。実直である語り口調。
全八章。
「他のがん入門書」のごとき軽薄さは全くない。大学の講義のように堂々と基礎から教えてくれる。二つのがんを題材にして現状を率直に伝えている。オーソドックスな方法で現況を伝えてくれるているのである。（ああ、これが学生時代の講義ならばとため息が出る。）
　しかし、当事者にとってはつらい内容であるかもしれない。

健康な方が、単にこれらの病気について漠然とした予備知識を…という考えでお読みになったら、あるいはあまりに専門的に過ぎると感じられるかも知れない。万一、そうであっても、捨てずに書棚の隅に置いておかれることを強くお勧めする。不幸にして、自らや近親のかたがこれらのがんと診断されたとき、この本が最新にして、一般人に必要なほとんど全ての知識を与えてくれる。特に医者とのコミュニケーションをとるのに、患者側もこの程度の知識を用意することは、極めて有意義だと思う。（実体験による）
