筆者の、研究者として・医者として・一人の人間としての、この病気に対する総まとめが、分かりやすくかつ簡潔にまとめられている一冊。概要を知りたい人は細かいところを読み飛ばせるし、詳しく知りたい人には参考図書の紹介もあって、導入にはもってこいだと思います。本文はせいぜい220ページ程度なので、その気になれば１日で読めてしまいます。もちろんこの１冊で全てを理解することは出来ませんが、この病気に対する公平なイメージを持つことができ、次への理解へと進めることが出来ると思います。

　私が精神分裂病に罹患したときに幸運にも最初に出合った本です。
　分裂病の全体像を理解するうえでは、大いに参考になりました。
　ただ、分裂病による犯罪の問題などは、あまり詳しくありません。
　分裂病の影響のために犯罪を起こしてしまう人々がいるのは否定しがたい事実です。もちろん、１００％分裂病によって引き起こされたことが証明された犯罪はありませんが。
　精神分裂病のネガティブな部分には詳しくないという問題もありますが、それを差し引いても大いに評価できる一冊です。
　精神障害者を語るつもりならば、最低でもこの本は読んでもらいたいものです。

タイトルは『精神病』であるが、中身は統合失調症について書かれている。
統合失調症について、医療だけでなく福祉についても触れられており、概観を知るのに適した本。
