　この頃から、日本古代史に対する研究が、イデオロギーの呪縛から解き放たれて、いわば素直で客観的なってきたような気がします。それを、新書にて素人にもわかりやすく書いていただいたことは画期的だと思います。
　例えば、和辻哲郎の名著「古寺巡礼」で重視されている法隆寺のエンタシス風の柱の解釈や、正倉院に保存されている歴史的資料をギリシャ文明のシルクロード終端説の根拠とする通説などが、西洋に追いつこうとする日本の近代のまなざしがもたらした憶測であるという解釈をしているところなどがそうである。
　特に、日本史を考古学等の多様な成果を取り入れた東アジア史として捉えると言う視点は、壮大なだけではなく実に本質を突いた考え方だと思います。

　天皇を核とするヤマトの古典的国制（194頁）が、中近世の国制と重複しながら、基層として現代にまで持続してきたと考える、1933年生まれの日本古代史研究者が、日本の相対化のために、特に東アジア世界の国際的交通に注目し、日本の成り立ちの序説（主として弥生〜平安期）として、1997年に刊行した本。本書の主張は、第一に親魏倭王権の重要な機能が、朝鮮産鉄資源の狭い流通路の掌握にあったこと、第二に4〜6世紀に中国の姓の制度が周辺諸国に継受されたが、中国の冊封体制から離脱し、朝鮮諸国の国制を継受しながら、小中華帝国への道を選択した倭王権は、自ら倭姓を捨てたこと、第三に特に4世紀後半以降、倭の各地と朝鮮の間の双方向の人口移動が活発化したこと（特に任那（75頁）と飛鳥）、第四に推古朝の国制改革の起点が、600年遣隋使のカルチャーショックに求められていること、第五に唐・統一新羅の成立に伴う国際的な動乱に対処するための、東アジア諸国（朝鮮、吐蕃など）の権力集中政策の一環として、蘇我氏の専横と大化改新（豪族からの王権の制度的自立）が、更には律令国家の早熟的形成（氏族制との二重構造、家制度の萌芽）が見られうること、第六に壬申の乱に伴う日のイデオロギーの高揚の中で、伊勢神宮の地位向上と、中国を意識した日本（東方）の国号の成立が見られること、第七に墾田永年私財法は公地公民制の解体ではなく、耕地の実態把握に寄与したこと、第八に平安初期に天皇の地位の制度的確立、神仏習合の始まり、個人名の唐風化、梅から桜への美意識の転換、いろは48字の成立、穢れ観念の肥大化が見られ、それは唐宋変革期における東アジアのエトノス形成の一環であったこと、等である。どのレベルに達した場合に「確立」となるのか等の疑問は残るが、国際情勢を踏まえた上で日本の変化を再検討し直す本書は、非常に興味深い。

地理的環境という内在的要因と、その時々の国際情勢という外在的要因から8Cまでの日本国成立過程の詳細な分析を通じて、開かれた新しい「日本国」のアイデンティティを構築する試みがされていました。

国際的な動乱に対して権力集中と軍事体制強化を早急に進める近畿を中心とした「倭」が、従来の氏族制も残しながら「華」の統治技術―律令制を導入し早熟的な国家「日本国」として誕生していく様が大変わかりやすく描かれていました。

文末に筆者が述べているように、本書では現在の国民国家「日本」との関連については言及されていない、ということがひとつの大きなメッセージであるように思えました。
