本書は『日本の近代建築（上）―幕末・明治篇―』の続編として書かれています。明治の時代とともに展開した近代建築も、大正に入ると大きな転機を迎え、第二世代が登場し、彼らは建築とは何かを内省し、社会性、技術の表現、実用性などのテーマを発見しました。その後、昭和に入るとモダニズムの影響を受けて第三世代が花開き、ファシズムの影響もうけつつ今に続いています。
この本は上・下巻２冊からなっていますがこの２冊を通して読むことで近代日本建築の移り変わりがわかると思います。この２冊は普通の論文風ではなく新書で簡潔にまとめられているので大変明快で読みやすかったです。

数年前に、藤森氏の先生にあたる村松貞次郎氏の「日本近代建築の歴史」が新書化されるなど、日本の近代建築の通史的な入門書はこの本以外にも出ていますが、自分が読んだ中では、この本がいちばん読みやすく、かつ、いちばん面白く感じました。

あくまで読み物の体裁をとっているので、机の本棚に置いて参考書的に使える本といった感じではありませんが、その分だけ読みやすく、かつ、一通り読んでおけば、現存している主だった近代建築とその設計者について、聞きかじり程度の知識を得ることが出来るようになっています。

今のところ重版もされていて、(金額的にも)入手しやすいので、日本の近代建築について勉強したい、そのための教科書的な本が欲しい、という方には是非ともお勧めできる一冊です。

江戸時代末期以降の日本の洋風建築の歴史を上下 2 巻にわけて解説している．下巻では明治の建築家たちが成熟し，さまざまな流派にわかれて伝統的な様式でさまざまな建築をたてていくところからはじまるが，地震とのたたかいがひとつの焦点である．関東大震災の復興の際などにつくられ，最近しばしばツアーがくまれている同潤会アパートや復興小学校などがとりあげられている．また，短期間にアールヌーボーやさまざまなモダニズム (表現は，ライト派，バウハウス派，コルビュジェ派など) のなかをはしりぬけていくさまがえがかれている．ナチスの影響なども分析されている．興味をひかれる点がおおい．
