まず、ぼくは、ル・コルビュジェ、磯崎新などの建築論しか読んだことがないので、本書が記述する日本の近代建築史の個別的な妥当性までを判定する能力はもっていないことをお断りしておきます。とはいえ、以下のような著者の方法論は的確であり、現代において求められている歴史叙述の最低水準をクリアしている、と思いました。

「具体的な事情はもちろん書きつづってきたとおりだが、建物というものは建築に直接かかわる技術や人や表現意欲だけで生れるものではない。一つの建物の背景には、（中略）政治的な意志、（中略）制度、それを受け入れた社会、さらに事業を可能とする経済力と技術力、また表現の基となる美意識や文化、どれ一つ欠かせない。（中略）建築とは、政治、経済、社会、文化といった何でも呑み込むバケツのような表現領域なのである。建築は時代をそのまま表現する」（本書156頁）。

つまり、著者は、意匠の歴史、建築家の歴史という視点だけからではなく、政治史、文化史、社会史という観点からも、建築史を議論していきます。すなわち、おおまかにぼくがまとめてしまうと、１．海外から来た「冒険技術者」による「コロニアル」（植民地的）、２．江戸日本以来の「棟梁」による「擬洋風」、３．海外から来た「御雇建築家」による「歴史主義の導入」、４．「御雇建築家」の弟子筋である「日本人建築家」による「歴史主義の学習」、というようにです。

「な~んだ、どの日本近代史叙述にも見られる、外来と内発の歴史、欧化と回帰の歴史か」と思われるかもしれません。が、たんにそれに終わるのではなく、やはり、図表、写真も多数で、建築家ごとの具体的エピソードや特殊事情も記述されています。これが、著作が上下二巻本になったゆえんでしょう。

　新書判における唯一無二と言っても良い日本近代建築史の概説書。幕末に於ける西洋建築の導入から敗戦に至るまでの日本の近代建築の流れが、年表を追うだけではなく各章の主題ごとに（歴史主義、モダニズムなどの主題ごとに）叙述されている。同著者の「建築探偵」シリーズは弾けた文体と内容であるが、それに比べるとこの本は相当アカデミックだ。少し年月が経っているのは気になるし専門家でないから内容の細かい評価は建築の専門家に譲るとして、新書２冊1700円でこれだけの通史が読めるのは専門家でない一般読者にとってお買い得だ。有名作家や歴史主義・アールデコ・モダニズムなどの基本事項は大体網羅されている。近代建築に興味があって歴史的背景を知りたい人にお薦めする。新赤版になってからの岩波新書としては重厚で学術的。上下巻にも拘らず出版した点は評価したい。

江戸時代末期以降の日本の洋風建築の歴史を上下 2 巻にわけて解説している．上巻では外国人建築家によってもたらされた洋風建築が日本人によって模倣され，最初の日本人建築家たちが登場するところまでをえがいている．もっとも興味をひかれるのは，よくわからないまま西洋建築をまねて日本人の棟梁がたてた奇妙な擬洋風建築を，著者が「建築探偵」的あるいは「路上観察学」的な視点で観察し写真を紹介しているところである．龍など，西洋にない装飾をつけたギリシャ風の柱，構造物からただのかざりになってしまったアーチなどが紹介されている．
