今日、市民社会論、非営利組織論が興隆の感を見せている。本著が書かれたのは1992年であり、その中では間違いなく先駆的な著として位置づけられる。
本著の主題は情報とネットワークであり、ボランティアは事象にすぎない。1992年という時代を考えれば事象としてのボランティアに焦点を当てる意味もあったのかもしれないが、そのハゥ・トゥーや体験談を求めて読むのならこの書でなくても良いだろう。本著はサブタイトルにあるように情報社会を予言する社会論である。
今日、経済や社会の閉塞感のなかで、様々な分野で第三の道が模索されている。いわく、資本主義でも社会主義でもなく、保守主義でもリベラルでもなく、国でも民間でもないという。その先にあるものを語るのに、事象以上のものを捉えられない論者が多い中で、バルネラブル（傷つきやすい）をキーワードにその構造を解き明かし、情報社会における人間の関係性を描く論理には一定の説得力がある。
自立した強い個人が経済や社会の主役になるというのが、第一のセクターが語る第三のセクター像だ。このことを考えるとバルネラブルというキーワードは逆説的にも読めるのだが、それが今日の市民社会の現実であるとすれば、自己責任論に対して倒置的な視点を提示したといえる。
　企業の社会的責任論に触れた部分は、メセナ活動がバブルのあだ花として想起される今日やや隔世の感を抱く。バルネラブルというキーワードが新しい関係性を構築するほど強いメカニズムを持ちうるかという点について議論もあろう。個人的には、情報社会において、国や企業、コミュニティーへの帰属の意識がどのように変化していくのかという議論に関心がある。しかし、日本の市民社会を語るために読んでおいて損は無い一冊である。

　私もボランティア活動に参加しているのでどんな本なのかなと思って図書館で借りてみました。

　ボランティアの説明や実例はもちろん書かれていたけれど、ボランティアが話の中心ではなく、情報とボランティアの関係を説明していたところが多かった。

　10年以上前に書かれているので、ボランティアの認識も今とは違っていると思うので、最近の本も読んでみたい。
