本書の中では、文の並び、すなわち縦に文字の並ぶ日本語のような縦書き、英語のような左から書く横書き、アラビア語のような右から書く横書きそして、思いも寄らない文の並び、が紹介されている。わたしはこの部分だけでも本書を買う価値があると思う。

その他、他者を思いやりにあふれた日本語表現や難解な日本語、わけても憲法のような構造の見えにくい日本語など幅広い話題について紹介され、著者の深い見識が窺える、知的で楽しいつくりとなっている。外国との言葉を通じた言語や文化の比較も面白い。

　金田一氏は言う。「日本人がアメリカへ行って色の黒いお手伝いさんを雇う。その人間が台所でコーヒー茶碗を割った。何と言うか。／お茶碗が割れたよ／と言うのだそうだ。「お茶碗を割った」とは言わない。〔中略〕日本人はちがう。〔中略〕自分の責任にして、／お茶碗を割りました／と表現するのである。自分の手柄は極力隠そうとする、自分の落度ははっきり認めようとする。日本人の心遣いがこういう表現に出ていると思う。」〔276-277頁〕
　この米国人の挿話は伝聞形式で語られているが、果たして事実なのだろうか。そもそも、なぜ米国で雇われたお手伝いさんが「お茶碗が割れたよ」と“日本語で”言うのだろうか。つまり、金田一氏が聞いたのは、例えば、茶碗を割った米国人が“The cup broke.”と言ったというような話だったのではないか。
　しかし、児玉徳美氏は次のように書いている。「英語はうっかりコップが割れたりコーヒーがこぼれた瞬間でも通例(13a,c)〔引用者注：“I broke the glass.”“I spilled it[coffee].”という文を指す〕のように言う。日本語流に直訳した(13b,d)〔引用者注：“Oh, The glass broke.”“Oh, it spilled.”という文を指す〕の英語は不自然である。まして人に謝る場合、(13b,d)は論理矛盾で不適格になる。」〔「ことばをめぐる言説」『言語文化研究』15巻1号、110-111頁〕つまり金田一氏が伝える挿話は事実に反する可能性がある。日本人論が如何にあやふやなデータに基づいているかを示すよい見本である。
　また、《心遣いが欠けている》外国人の代表として描かれている米国人がわざわざ「色の黒い」人だと限定されているのはなぜか。「色の白い」人なら同様の言い訳をしないという意味なのだろうか。
