この偉人の書く本は、どの本も内容が盛りだくさんで、
消化不良をおこしそうになるほどです。

非常に博識で、湧き水のように引用される文献、書籍は膨大で
しかも的確です。
引用されるのは、書籍類だけではなく、歌にまで及びます。

日本語をもう一度見直し、考え直す上でよい教科書になることは
間違いありません。

英語などの非ネイティブ言語を勉強するときには、
日本語をまず知る必要がある。私はそう思ってこの本を読みました。
この本は、日本語が他の言語とどう違うのかを、発音や語彙から、
例を用いながら具体的説明しています。
言葉は、その国の文化や歴史と密接に関係してくるので、
語学の勉強だけでなく、文化や歴史を学ぶ上でも参考になると思います。
ただ、著者の方が1913年生まれで、この本がでたのが10年以上前なので、
全体的に内容が少し古い感じがしました。
それほど言語の進歩は早いということでしょうか。
それでも、語学を勉強されてる方は読んだ方がよいと思います。
私の場合は、まちがいなく英語の勉強の参考になったと思います。

この本は「日本語」を言語学的に解説した本ではあるが、 素人にとって苦痛となるような解説はされていない。 それどころか、他言語との比較や豊富で的確な用例の数々によって豊かに肉付けされたこの本は、言語学の素人には「日本語を媒介として日本の風土と日本の文化の面白さを解説する書」として読める本だ。

ただ、あまりに文法的な正確さを追い求めた為か、世俗の表現とかけ離れた表現が数カ所あった。また、所々バランスを欠いて（と私は思ったのだが）日本や日本文化を賞賛しすぎていた。この２点がなければ文句なしの５つ星だ。 たとえ４つ星であってもこの本は必ず読むべきだと思う。
